I found a vampire
« on: May 25, 2012, 05:44:20 pm »

New way to identify bloodsucking abominations. I haven't seen anyone mention it before but apparently draining a dwarf gives them "took joy in slaughter lately."

Are you sure it wasn't a soldier or a hunter?

Not only was she not a soldier or a hunter she had no recorded kills. Plus she had been kicked out of a few civilizations and claimed to be 43 with three grown children and a husband none of whom were in the fortress. I'm positive it was her.

...and claimed to be 43...

doesn't have to mean anything. women always lie about their age ;)

I'd be shocked if dwarves didn't eat the demons they killed. After all, if they're willing to eat a poison spewing monstrosity, why not a flying dinosaur thing that hates all life?

Probably the most definitive way to be sure is to load a pre-embark copy of the world into Legends Mode and filter for the name under Historical Figures.  But for that, you need the real name.  Dwarf Therapist gives you that, but then you know already, don't you.   :P

I prefer to do it with in-game methods. I lock them in a drowning chamber and see if they gasp for air or have them cut with a menacing spike and have a cheesemaker drink water tainted with their blood.

This is almost exactly like testing for a witch. If they drown, it wasn't a vampire, and if they don't, it's a vampire that should be killed?

Hell, just lock him in a room with the cheese maker. If you lose him, it's a layoff in a dead department.

Kill them, forbid/magma their corpse, and see if the resulting ghost still kills drains dwarves of blood. Easiest way I know of for checking if they're a vampire, anyway.

It is exactly like testing a witch, Vampires don't breathe so drowning doesn't bother them. I actually discovered this with a less civilized method of snapping their neck and seeing if they died.

Same basic principle with the blood drinking thing, if the cheese maker becomes a vampire I can get creative with two subjects instead of one.

It just happened again, another dead body and another dwarf with no kills that took joy in slaughter.

Vampires enjoy drinking dwarf blood?

they killed something, thus, "took joy in slaughter."

The fortress is clearly infected beyond hope.
Cleansing with magma will not be enough. Release the Bronze Colossus, then use magma.

In my last fort my manager was a vampire. I checked legends and he had over 1000 kills..lol.
Funny thing though; once there were a few witnesses, I set a hotkey to follow him around and he just started hoarding tattered socks in his office and didn't kill anyone else......
until the goblins showed up and took my fort. He was the last Dwarf standing...
