I thought it was just a one wizard limit. But I'll just wait for mainiac's respond.

Well, he approved my concept- human bard, so I'm guessing that bards are ok in this case. They really aren't that much of spellcasters, anyway. Mainly illusions and enchantment.

What can I say. I like the name. Here's the second sheet.

Spoiler: The second Aldun Sharp (click to show/hide)

Mechanically he's a ninja, but for the sake of low fantasy we'll call it a 'rogue' or 'thief'. Ki powers will be written off as a difficult to do dive out of sight, or something similar.

I am honestly very tempted to try and pull off a paladin in this, somehow. Just to prove a paladin can scheme and connive with the best of 'em, without falling.

Oh I think that a paladin would be quite adept indeed since they can detect evil at will and they'd never be suspected of lying.  That's why I said no paladins as starting characters in the first post...

Ah, my apologies. I must have missed that somehow. My post was made around 3am, so I wasn't exactly in a...functioning mindset.
I'll come up with a different idea and get back to you.

Since I have a backstory already written up, I just thought I'd post this here already. I tried my best to make his warlock abilities fit into a low magic world.

I might be interested in joining. What do you think about warlocks from Complete arcane? Also, you didn't mention bards in the OP. Are they banned?

Forgot about bards!  I didn't have any lore for them so I didn't write them up.  But they'd obviously be useful for this sort of campaign and I like them so they are in.

I didn't know about the warlock class when I was writing up this setting.  That's a shame because it offers a non-vancian alternative that could work well in the campaign.  I'm gonna take a little time to mull this over.  But I also warn you that I'm hesitant to let there be too many casters in a campaign that's supposed to be low magic.

3AM is such a wonderful time of the day.  :)

Right now the characters of Aduial the elven noblewoman (Lord Bucket) and Aldun Sharp the Rogue (The Fool) look good for the setting.  Lord Bucket was indicating some other ideas though so feel free to hit me up with those.

It seems to me that skill monkeys and diplomancers may be able to far outclass any of the other PCs, barring the lone wizard's trusty book of spells.
How important will the optimization be, in the grand scheme of things? How do you feel about factotums?

And since it's important as far as builds go: How quickly will we be leveling? At what level should we expect this to come to an end?

A jack of all trades will certainly have moments to shine but characters are going to be defined by background as well as stat block.  If your background fits the situation then a fighter with +0 to diplomacy checks might still find that his word counts for far more then the bard with +10 to such checks.  Anyone who is a fighter is going to automatically be afforded a certain degree of respect.  A knight of the realm with ranks in fighter or barbarian is a better beacon of knightly honor then some more conniving.  A shady mercenary who is a fighter or barbarian commands some street cred automatically that someone indirect would have avoided.  It's possible to influence people to get what you want but it's also possible to just play the hand you are dealt smartly.  A mix of such characters is the most potent combination.

As for leveling up, expect that to happen on the completion of campaign arcs as your characters rise in profile.  For instance getting to the bottom of Marshal Lorsen's tyranny would be followed by leveling up, as well as your characters coming to the notice of the local powers.

Edit: Backstory for Entren approved.  Updated OP with list of languages.

mainiac, when you post would you consolidate a list of accepted characters into the OP? By my count three players were accepted but there were a few extra applications and it would be convenient to have all players listed in one place.

Also, since everyone seems to have character names that are different from bay12 names I'd like to propose that that once we've been introduced, players come up with a character avatar, and make a point of posting character name and avatar every time we make in-character gameplay posts. As the thread grows, that will allow game actions and who's doing them to stand out rather than being lost amidst the out of character discussion.

If anyone needs image hosting or a quick how to on posting images, let me know.

((game mechanics note: I've decided that warlock characters are a no-go.  As much as I wish I'd considered them while coming up with this campaign I'd rather keep it the way it is for now.  It's still possible to add in another, non-warlock character.

LordBucket has some good ideas but I'm a little too tired for followup at this moment.))

The twenty-third day of the month of August comes to an end in the four-hundred and forty seventh year of the Age of Resortation.  The world gets by as it always does in fitful mixture of peace and choas.  On a distant shore the men of the west kingdoms and the elves of the empire spill each others blood.  In a land across the seas and mountains the dwarven clans morn the death of a great king and sharpen their blades for the conflict that is sure to follow.  But for the moment the eastern kingdoms of men have been granted a respite from war.  For now the kingdoms do no war with each other, the orcs along the frontier have been subdued and the deamons of the wastelands are pleased to scheme rather then wage open war upon their mortal neighbors.  It is a year of relief when wise men count their blessings and stash away much of the harvest for hard years to come.

But amidst the relative tranquility in the kingdom of Nosarri one corner of the realm is being torn apart by strife.  The town of Narseus has been decending into strife as it's trusted Marshal Lorsen has become like a man possessed.  Just one year ago Marshal Lorsen was a pillar of the town and a symbol of justice.  Five years back he was the hero of the town for leading it's men to glory in the kingdoms war against the invading orcish tribes.  But today...

Screams ring out through the plaza as the galloping horsemen pursue their targets without regard to the swath of destruction they leave in their wake.  Shopkeepers stalls are smashed by the charging horses, children wail out in terror and a pair of halflings lay in the street.  One writhes and calls out in pain while the other lies bleeding and still.  The citizens of Narseus might be shocked by this violence but are not confused by it, Lorsen's men have especially little sympathy for halflings of late.  Leading the trio of horsemen is the Marshal's most feared deputy, Sargeant Regdar.  Regdar has always been cruel but it is only of late that he has been let loose like this.

The men's targets a halfling merchant and his human companion frantically run for the town's western gate as the crowd melts away around him.  They look to have time to make it to the exit but will surely be caught in the clearing outside of town.  With little chance of escape their destiny lies in the tender mercies of their sadistic pursuers.

As the crowd flees three very different onlookers watch, by chance all spectators to the chaotic event.

Near the gate stands the bard Entren Armeni, returned just this day from his travels.  He had been talking with an old friend about the troubles plaguing the town of late.  Their conversation was interrupted by a demonstration of what the city had in store.

Twenty yards from the gate stands the mercenary Aldun Sharp, returned to town last night thanks to a lucrative but dangerous job escorting a carvan of unidentified cargo.  His face still bears the ghost of a bruise he sustained on that mission but it seemed worth the trouble at the tiem.  Never before had he had a job which paid two silvers up front and another five promised on arrival.  But now it appears that what seemed to good to be true was too good to be true.  As the pursued pair flees Aldun recognizes the halfling.  It is his recent employer, Orsi Stoutfoot, who still owes him the five silvers that were to be paid upon the sale of the cargo.

Another thirty yards down the street the noblewoman Aduial is pressed up against the wall by the throng as the horsemen approach.  Her companion, Erwin curses the peasant rabble around them and tries to clear space for her but does little but obstruct her view of the action.
Aduial had nominally come to Narseus on behalf of Erwin's patron, the Baron Radhan who's family claimed unlawful imprisonment.  She could chose to reveal, or not, her compelte mission at a time of her chosing.  When Aduial had found the Baron's right hand man, Erwin, at the town hall he insisted that she escort him to the Radhan estate.  He claimed the town was too dangerous for her until he explained the situation.  They had scarcely walked for five minutes however before their trip was interrupted by the choatic chase.

((And the opening scene begins.  Don't feel like the fact that I'm putting you guys all at the same scene means you are obliged to meet up, strangers at a bar style.  You'll run into each other again soon enough ;)  You can intervene in the chase scene before you.  You can also feel free to have your character stay out of it to watch and/or head somewhere else.  I don't have a list of locations written up yet but feel free to go anywhere that should plausibly exist, i.e. the prison where the fugitives will go if arrested, the bar where Aldun got hired, the home of a halfling elder that Entren would know from his time in the city, the city guard barracks etc.))

I suppose descriptions are in order:

Aduial:

An attractive elven woman. At 5'4" and 100 pounds, Aduial is taller than the average elf, but of typically slender build. She has blue eyes, long platinum blonde hair, and a relatively dark complexion. Dressed in a fancy all-white courtier's outfit with wide decorative shoulders, thigh boots, silk gloves, a cape, gold trim and jewelry to match, she clearly appears to be a member of the upper class. On her left hip she carries a rapier, on her right both a dagger and spell component pouch, and on her lips she wears a perpetual hint of a smile as if she finds something unspoken to be very amusing.

: "Good to know the locals aren't afraid of elves. Though I admit I'm accustomed to having a little more personal space than this. Erwin, my faithful escort...who and why exactly are those men taking out their feelings of inadequacy on the halflings? If possible I'd prefer my introduction to Narseus law enforcement not come by way of publicly humiliating them, but that looks like excessive force to me."

(One hand on pack, one hand on dagger. Anyone tries to pickpocket me they lose a hand. Anyone tries to cop a feel I allow them time to enjoy themselves, wait for them to pull away...and then they lose the hand. It's too early in the day to be getting blood on my clothing. Also, listen to the crowd. Where do their sympathies lie? Are the murmurings more along the lines of "Oh, how awful!" or "About time they rounded up those little thieves!" ?)

Does this mean you're not accepting any more players? I've got a character I'd like to try out. Not adapted for D&D yet, but I can begin filling out his sheet right now.
