People who make bills like these keep forgetting one thing:

The Internet isn't isolated in one country. It is in a sense, a parallel earth, and to conquer it, one would need a workforce the size of the whole world.

Of course, there are people who oppose it, often for very obvious and justifiable reasons, so there's next to nil chance of this being passed, IMO.

(ACTA is a different case, being multinational. Bastards.)

Man, the stupidity of my own countrymen shocks me some times.

How in the hell are you going to enforce it? Besides, ain't the internet used by far more decent people than HAXXORZ AND TEH CEHBERBURRIES. No one who knows a single thing bout' the internet would ever let it pass.

Yeah, this isn't going anywhere. It's not passing the state Congress, and if it does it's not passing the Governor's Office, and if it does it's definitely not passing the courts.

More like people not being stupid. Hacktivists are not required to just say no. To wit:

METALSLIMEHUNT, THE STATE OF NEW YORK REQUIRES ALL OF YOUR PRIVATE INFORMATION

"No."

And they can't do a damn thing about it, because I'm in North Carolina and Toady is in Washington.

Even if it did pass there is zero chance of it ever being seriously enforced.

A method of government enforced censorship the kind that could be used in elections not being used?

I guess I lived on mars.

This bill is FAR too useful for corrupt ends not to be used if it was passed.
You know this is NY we are talking about right? The Democrats will win anyway, so I don't think they would even use this censor anything but the democratic base during primaries. I don't think that would really work, as that would create immense resentment from your base and could backfire really badly.

can't do a damned thing to me, either, because I'm not in the US, but still, one country passes it, for all I know other countries will go 'hey, that's not a bad idea...'

Not to mention that the US claims jurisdiction over the entire internet so it's still potentially problematic to everyone if it goes nationwide.  Although it'll be by definition ridiculously hard to enforce (you won't know who to punish if they don't comply).

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

People live in New York? That's almost as insane as living in new jersey or Philadelphia.

Oh I thought that city was leveled three or four times by that big robot car thing. How could anyone possibly live there?

Okay on a more serious note: About that cyberbullying stuff, a while back we found this slanderous website about some girl that went to my high school. There was some pretty horrendous stuff in there. And it wasn't even one of those free web page hosting services, whoever did it paid for the site hosting and webmaster and everything. I just don't understand who would pay (I think its like $95 a month? year?) to run this site.
