what do i do? is this a bug or a hilarious river name (im embarking on it!)

It appears to be abbreviating the name - although I have no idea what would cause that.

Also, this might not be correct, because why would a river be named "Stupidjaw the Scorching Fire"?

Yep. It's just a really long name and it doesn't have space for all of it.

well ive never had a rivers name abbreviated before... maybe a bug with the newest version?

I've seen it several times in this version... I don't recall about previous ones though.

Yes, it is an abbreviation of the full name of the river. I think something may have changed in the way the game displays long sentences.. these abbreviations even show up when your outpost liaison comes to talk to your mayor.

I've only seen abbreviations before with dwarves' names in the military screen.

I've noticed this type of shortening all over the place on the newer versions, location names, dwarf names on military screen, artifact names (which tend to be long anyway).

I think it's really the work of the Dwemer.  As anyone who's played Morrowind can attest, the Dwemer weren't terribly fond of vowels in their place names   I often joke to friends that they really went extinct trying to pronounce places like Arkgnthand-Sturdmz:  they broke their jaws and starved to death.

More on topic, I haven't seen this yet, but I only recently got back into playing after a long hiatus.

I get this sometimes too, especially with dwarves who earn titles. Pressing f12 to turn on truetype fixed it for me, so give that a shot.

This is a good feature, like captchas that insult or amuse you. A cookie to anyone that manages to get anything abreviated to something funny, sick, dirty or including the word boobs.
