That one looks like it's inspired by Battleships Forever, that I don't thinks been mentioned yet. All the ships are composed of destructible modules so you can, for example, target and destroy specific weapons systems on an enemy ship. Lot's of fun, it's got a short series of campaign missions and then a bunch of generic mission modes. You can even design your own ship classes.

Oh yeah, and it's free.

If you feel like getting your ass whipped, try Allegiance. It's a multiplayer RTS/Space Combat game that puts quite a lot of emphasis on the RTS part.

I played that for a while. Used to mainly pick up pods. I should try it again now I have a PC that won't chug in dogfights.

Two games, both of them tactical space battle games.

The first one is much newer, Flotilla, which is a fairly silly but tactical game. Each game lasts only a few hours, and it's completely randomly generated each time.

The second is much older, all the way back from 1989, which is Begin 2, a highly detailed Star Trek tactical tick based game, where you have to give each ship commands through text, and although it was apparently shareware, the only download I can find is from Home of the Underdogs, so I'm not sure I should link it.

Flotilla's story was kinda sad though. I could never really get over the fact that there was an enforced timelimit on my exploits.

Flotilla is really fun. I would definitely recommend it.

Begin is free, and someone modified it to be multiplayer, you can get that here: http://begin2.sourceforge.net/
That package uses the executables of several previous releases, so you can also play the original 1.65, 2.01, and 2.65 in the /data/dos folder.
You do need to use Dosbox, but a version is packaged with it.

Transcendence all the way!
-snip-
Going +1 this, and include a link.
However, the main page hasn't had an update download for quite a while, so you can get the latest version of it here.

Spoiler: image list (click to show/hide)
You can find them on this site, those are just the ones I have, there are plenty more though.

Or ask for suggested mods on this irc
Transcendance IRC
I'd solidly recommend network, weapons extended, Gravity, Cargo summary, autorefuel, and playership drones if you can get it to work.
