More children?
« on: May 19, 2012, 09:44:34 am »

Has anyone noticed more children arrive in the past two versions?  The first fort I made in .31 had 50 children and babies out of 150 dwarves.  Then the one I made in .34 had a similar proportion; has anyone else noticed this or is it a new balance feature that I didn't see?
Am I just unlucky?

Its mostly due to more dwarves being tracked as historical figures, combined with families migrating as a unit.

so it's just symptom of the new systems?
Could it be possibly fixed by reducing the length dwarves spend as youths?
just wondering if I should submit it to the bug report; I'll search to see if anyone already posted it

Its not a bug. Migrants are HFS now, so they come with kids/wives/husbands.

Yes, a lot of people. Migrants + Legends = big families with lots of marriages.

Marriages in all versions prior to now were the big thing in the way of forts composed entirely of children.

I know it's not a bug exactly, but I'm sure toady didn't intend for a third of the population in any given fort to be functionally useless.

Well, if those dwarves would just stop fuckin' for a moment and get to work, maybe we'd get something done around here! Hell, I don't even think dwarves know how to use a condom.

I think Toady should incorporate sex ed in DF.

In my forts all migrants are killed on sight (I can't stand people having family who are not present in my fort) so I really need my Dwarfs to do less working and more fucking. Or sporing, I dunno.

Wait, wouldn't killing migrants lead to a lot of FUN? Because that's how I lost my first fort. Ended up with just two dwarves, a legendary Axedorf and the legendary speardorf mayor. They kept on killing the migrants so I thought of burrowing them somewhere, but that might lead to berzerker fury, so I just decided to keep them busy engraving pictures of them killing their friends somewhere. Sadly though, when the sieges come and they have to play, they end up killing everybody else in the room... so I just gave up.

Unless you kill them through other means, like magma flood or something. That's less fun.

I like the kids. When one of my favorite dwarves dies a part of them can still live on, and, some day, they'll grow and have kids of their own and the cycle begins anew. If only viewing family trees was easier. My forts rarely last that long but I can count times where I had a female dwarf idle for a year somewhere safe just so she has a chance to bear children.

On a side note, there is nothing more depressing than wiping out an entire bloodline due to your own incompetence.

I agree. I only slaughter a dwarf when he has at least one son so his bloodline can continue. I also rename all Dwarfs so they share their father's surname.

That moment when you realize you've been removing entire possible families from the Dwarven gene pool because they refuse to remarry... Splendid.
