Hydra Catching
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:21:55 am »

So I'v been playing Dwarf Fortress for about a year now. REALLY love the game! Ever since I heard that Dragons were in the game and tameable I'v always wanted to catch one. With my year playing I have yet to see one and still haven't. But today I came across a Hydra lair in adventure mode and of course I died. Luckily the lair was still marked on the world map. I decided to have a team of Dwarfs go there solely for the purpose of catching this beast for WAR. I was able to place cage traps around its lair without AGGROing it. Then I noticed that it wasn't leaving its lair. So I decided to do a little trick by digging a channel 1 z level high and 2 squares north. Once I'd place traps I'd have a miner go down and mine the wall between him (Hydra) and the traps. Funny thing is this Hydra left his lair and went to the channel thinking it was part of his lair....BUT the cage traps didn't even go off or catch him.......The wiki says they are able to be caught and tamable but I don't understand. Hes ran back and fourth a few times now without being caught. The traps aren't jammed or anything so I don't understand the problem. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

You have to knock him out on top of the trap, I believe.  Use a cave in and the dust will knock him out.

I think because he was on the map from the start he knows where you put the traps and can avoid them.

I'll add my voice to the pile, confirming what Puzzlemaker said.

Creatures like this that exist at the start of your embark are friendly, in a certain sense, & won't set off traps.

You will have to be sneaky with a combination webbed trap or careful application of cave in dust & so on.

This was supposed to be a cool upgrade. All I got was more hostile zombies.

Creatures which are residents of the site you embark on are immune to cage traps.  You can't easily catch the hydra in a cage trap.  You'll have to do something like knock it out with a cave-in, or cover the cage trap with giant cave spider webbing.

Cave spiders sounds a bit easier considering this guy is 1 z level below the surface and I have no idea how I'd get in there and place a trap.....I wonder if flood gates will work for that....anyways with the spiders. I'v caught a few of them before and man are they good war beasts. I'v actually managed to catch a few Forgotten Beasts in past Fortresses thanks to those guys. Might be a few in game years before I see some tho. There kinda rare for me. Like I'v made forts that are in caves and ONLY in caves. Found that those live the longest of all the other fortresses I make. Hopefully I'll be able to use some lures for them. That is if the floodgate idea I have fails.

You could use water to push him into a 1z pit with a cage trap in the bottom. (It would be stunned and caught by the trap.)

Heh yea I gave up. Was ambushed by Kobolds and spent the majority of resources trying to capture him. Oh well maybe next time. Rather have a dragon anyways.

If you embark right next to it, instead of on top, it should be high on the list of visitors to your fort

Hydras should be easy to catch, because they have no breath attack right?

You need to cause a cave in by linking a support to a lever, and have them drop down on cage traps.

Extremely large risk of permanently damaging the hydra like that

They are heavier than dragons? I like to imagine myself a expert on catching "current resident" type of critters after having caught 2 fire spraying dragons at the cost of a lot of useless fish dissectors.

My dragons were caught with little to no injury once they dropped.

Anything unconscious will be caught in the trap, no? Would it be possible to set up a drowning chamber with a cage trap inside so that the hydra is safely captured in it as soon as it passes out from lack of air? Do hydras even drown?

Drowning doesn't cause unconsciousness before death. It's just one or the other :£

Too bad animals heal so slow, what is the significance of scars really?

They look cool. It's the broken bones / infected wounds that would be horrendous.
