Artifacts and Yarn? Also, 12 Million Urist Artifact
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:47:36 pm »

Do the raw materials of an artifact have to be produced by the fort (not imported)? I encountered the Planepacked glitch, and despite going through 4 pages of materials, the dwarf won't pick up the last key ingredient: Yarn. But I imported all of it and have no sheep, alpacas, or llamas. What do?

Importation isn't the problem.  My dwarves have happily used foreign materials.

Un-assign your dwarf from any burrows to let him finish the artifact.

planepacked happens when the dwarf is assigned to a burrow that does not include the workshop itself.  If you add the workshop to whatever burrow he is in, he will continue collecting the next items on the list (but only items that are within the burrow).  Alternatively, remove the burrow, or remove him from it entirely.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I did, but he's just screaming for materials I already own.

I think yarn is a bit bugged.  I have had all kinds of trouble with it, personally.  Dwarves routinely refuse to make things out of plentifully available yarn, but are happy to use silk thread or plant thread all day long.  Irrespective of hospitals or imported/domestic, or anything else.

Unrelated: it would really suck to have your wounds sewn up with yarn...

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

If I'm reading that right, that's worth over twelve billion Urists.

12 Million, actually, but respectable nonetheless. Did he gain any skill from making this thing? Or was he just possessed by some kind of crafting god?

Did you kill them, or did they die of laughter at the thought of a dwarf not being able to build a rock door without wool?  :P

There's safe. Then there's unsafe. And then there's the average dwarf fort, which remains unrated because the OSHA inspector flatly refused to go anywhere within a dozen miles of the place.
