No more migrants, no more traders
« on: April 27, 2012, 09:31:28 am »

In the 4th year of my Fortress the dwarven traders stopped coming, and so did the migrants. Humans and elves come to trade, goblins are laying sieges and the kobolds try to steal things. The civs screen lists a dwarven queen and a general, and I got about ten migration waves before that.

So... what is going on? Is my civ dead? Are all of them in my fortress except for the queen and the general?

How to find out:
Copy your save
adbandon fort in that save
and look up your civ in legends mode, see how many dwarves are present.
This stuff does happen.

I'll try that when I can, thanks!

So... is this a common thing? I knew about the two hardcoded waves if your civ was dead, but this is new to me.

History stops outside your embark site once you start playing in fortress mode.  If your civilization was alive when you started playing, it's still alive now.

Is your fortress population over the population cap?  That will stop migrants from coming.

Inconveniently timed sieges will prevent trade caravans from appearing.

If it's listing nobles, there ARE other dwarves out there somewhere from your civ.

No migrants, and you're complaining? Sheesh ;)

10 waves already, you should be producing everything you need, unless you site is missing something critical, you shouldn't need the caravan anymore, either.

While odd, I say woohoo!

If the siege happens the same exact moment the traders usually come, the latter can bypass your site without notice. Sieges, ambushes, kobolds and traders all happen around 15th the last month of a season, which means up to four fun times per year (this has been true in all my fortresses), so sometimes the events go in that sequence (for example):
14th - caravan (running to my fort)
15th - goblins besieging (running after caravan)
16th - zombies besieging (running after everybody)
But sometimes the order is different, and there's no caravan visit in already besieged fortress (or no zombies or no kobolds). If I'm lucky this can keep repeating for a few years in row.

I'm at 170-180 or something, and the cap is at 200, right?

I need more cowbell dwarves!

This explains the traders thing. Goblins got bored or something, and started laying a lot of sieges. But... what about migrants? I always get the "No migrants this season" announcement.

Oh, and I forgot something. Traders don't bring cloth or leather anymore. I used to buy it all. Cloth is not a problem, since the pig tail farms are working efficiently, but I'm always short on leather, silk and wool.

Anyway, thanks everybody for the answers!

"Hey, this guy has crapload of cloth! Lets not bring any."

This happens to anything, if you have 2000+ weapons, no more weapons for you.

If you have alot of gore, they stay away.

Is this "The fortress attracted no migrants this season."? I got this only once during my current fortress life, couple of years after hitting the pop cap. Before that I wasn't getting an announcement, the migrants were simply not coming. I speculate that I get this message now, because my wealth is now rather big comparing to the last reported, and migrants cannot come because of cap. However, it may be possible that I got the announcements because there were no reports last year (caravan didn't come), regardless of cap.

Anyway, to attract migrants you need an increase in fortress wealth which is then reported by successfully leaving caravan. If you haven't hit the cap, and there were caravans reporting, then maybe your wealth is not enough for these snobs.
