Help!! I suck
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:09:38 pm »

So I do fine up until the point I'm at around 50+ dwarfs.  Once I get that many,  I can't keep track of what is going on.  My reports/etc are typically flooded with animals fighting, unable to do X things, and before I know it someone got eaten by a creature, my prized weaponsmith got bored and wanders off and breaks his leg, starves to death.  Everything just starts going crazy at that point.  Typically I can't keep up with clothing demands and eventually someone throws a tantrum, or goes crazy.  I wish you could tell the clothes shop to "Make an outfit" instead of telling them to make each individual piece, or being able to tell them to build "6 of each item" would be nice.

Please give me help!  I can't make it past 50 dwarves :(

Have you used the manager? If you assign a dwarf this skill, you can go into the u or j menu and hit m, and tell the manager to demand 10 pants, 10 shirts, and 10 pairs of xxfancystockingsxx. This may help with... well, managing your fort past 50 dwarves.

Also, bigger/multiple pastures stop will stop animals from fighting each other.

Honestly, I get bored fast with the amount of micromanagement necessary to keep a fort efficient at over 50 or so dwarves. Call me a coward, but I generally just set the population to something lower in d_init, and up it if I feel like it later on.

If you don't mind throwing in a mod, you could use Dwarf Therapist - some people claim it "makes the game playable". I used to use it, but stopped. I prefer battling chaos, honestly.

Me, too.. I suck at multitasking. The d_init file is in your "data" folder. I have the population cap set to 12 and the child cap to 3. That seems to stabilize your population to about 20 guys (although I'm a new player and never played a fort longer than about 3 years yet, so not sure).

The hardest part is the children.  They're always throwing tantrums and getting in fights, then they get killed and then it sets everyone else off!  They're unable to be pleased

Yeah.. I have a child in one fort that went insane and now refuses to drink, even though he is badly dehydrated. Is there any way to force him to drink something?

once they go insane, you just wait for them to die.

wow my civilization is special.

This is from a child:

He is Self Conscious; He doesn't handle stress well, He does not ever feel effective in life, He needs alcohol to get through the day.

HE'S A CHILD! Lol

I find that they calm down pretty quickly if you have enough good thought inducing stuff around to counter their embarrassment.

DF therapist and the manager will help you out a lot at that point.

I suggest you have at least one dedicated engraver to avoid the insanity. As to the other problems, I've never really had problems with keeping tabs on the important dwarves, so I can't really help you there.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

What about with traders?  I always offer them more value than what I'm asking for and they always get fed up and don't trade with me...
