Is there a way to force breeding between two dwarves?
« on: April 18, 2012, 09:42:10 am »

inb4 urist gaye.

i've got these two children who have been in the danger room for a while, nicknamed Prototype Alpha and Prototype Beta. When they become adults, is there a way to get the two of them to breed reliably?

Correct me if I am wrong but I think you'd have to cut them off from all other dwarves and stick them together with plenty of free time to get to know one-another.

It's not exactly ideal, but so long as they don't know anyone else as well as they know each other they may choose to get married and then breed.

Lock them in a room together, they'll socialize, get married, and start cranking out babies.

If you force them to spend a lot of time together, they will develop a social relationship.  Depending on the compatibility of their personality traits, this relationship might be 'Lovers', 'Friends', or 'Grudge'.  There does not seem to be a way to force the relationship to develop in a preferred direction, DF seems to decide it based on the personalities of the dwarves.  All you can do is give them a chance to develop a relationship and hope it's the right type.

chance!? hope!?

bah. i guess i'll stick 'em on the same squad and hope battlefield romance blossoms.

all i know is, alpha is a master fighter, dodger, and armor user, with a bunch of soul bonuses at the age of 3. beta is 4, and lagging a bit behind.

i would've been cool to wait a decade or so, and have some badass offspring.

yeah, but that ruins the point of my entire experiment, raising a supersoldier.

but, maybe if alpha becomes crippled, her and beta can crank out kids for me.

One night stand? I kept them in there for nearly a year, they were ecstatic the whole time from just talking... Talking the whole year.

There's not much benefit, although I guess any benefit is a good one. Basically I tried a Eugenics fortress, turns out Dwarven genetics work something like this:
Eye colour and skin colour are carried onto the child (all of my Dwarves were from the same race sadly, could not test with mixed parents)
Physical attributes are carried onto the child, rounded closer to average (bad skills become more average, ditto with good)
Body appearance like fat/muscle/skinniness appear to be carried on, but having parents with two different builds can throw this off a lot. I'm going to hazard a guess that it's random.
Mental attributes appear random.

I think I might start a better Eugenics fort...
