I tried to reclaim a fort built into the side of a mountain that had a volcano in it.  I hadn't breached the volcano yet at all.  It is quite possible that someone fell in since there was some fighting going on in that area.  Anyway, all of the sudden, the lava is pouring out over the rim of the volcano and lighting the mountainside/my dwarves on fire!  Now everyone is dead and much of the map is covered with huge lava flows.  !!Fun!!

I checked the wiki, and it claims that volcanic eruptions are planed but not yet implemented... I beg to differ!  Someone in the page's talk mentioned a bug that may or may not have been fixed when volcanoes and glowing pits occupied the same spot that could cause some sort of problem?

It's a bug. Basically what happens is that for some reason the game generates several additional levels of magma floating above the opening of the volcano. This is all fine and dandy until you the player show up and cause the gods of physics to take notice of the fortress and cause all of that beautiful magma to rain down upon the surrounding countryside.

But the volcano worked just fine (ie. it just sat there like a boring, well-behaved volcano) for several months during my initial embark.  In fact, I'm almost positive that I checked the top of the volcano and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed several stories of magma sticking up above the rim!  The problems didn't start till I tried to reclaim.

I wonder if the re-embark made it so that new magma was regenerating at a higher z-level, causing your overflow?

Water and magma don't count as items, the same way as trees don't.

this is a common "feature" on volcano reclaims.  basically, what happens is -

This sounds like a cool feature at this point, all you need to do is embark with 7 masons, a ton of bauxite and build a wall, to shunt the magma away from your reclaim. Reclaim with your normal crew, dig in, have permanent magma-y death killing elves and what not, win!
