Armour questions
« on: April 14, 2012, 12:15:16 pm »

So I was just wondering:
What are the best forms of armor (leggings vs. greaves etc.)?
And is Iron armour any good?

You have checked the wiki right? Dwarf Fortress wiki article on armor

My standard uniform layout:

Mail shirt
Breastplate
Helm
Gauntlets
Greaves
High boots
Shield

If you're feeling fancy you could add leather trousers, coats and cloaks (and mittens as well I think).

I generally use greaves rather than leggings, in my experience they offer better protection versus blunt attacks (I think this is the scientific consensus as well). Iron is good against copper weapons, medium to bad against everything else.  I would seriously suggest going the extra steps for steel, even if it's just a suit or two. A legendary fighter is a terrible thing to waste simply because you couldn't give him the resources he needed.

Try this link.

And yes, iron armor is great. Far better than copper, but not as good as steel. As to leggings vs greaves, I can't recall off the top of my head.

I think it's greaves, though.

You can have'em both on at the same time

My uniform for h2h dwarfs: mailshirt (up to 3) + breastplate + cap + helm + leggins + greaves + gauntlets + high boots (any reason to use low ones ever??)

EDIT: apparently this was for 0.31. Version 0.34 does not like (leggings+greaves) or (helm+cap) any more, so it's either first or second

Are you positive? Iirc legged armor is supposed to be a shaped item meaning only one pair of that armor, then leather/cloth underneath

I watched a zombie dwarf tear off a girls dress and hit her with it so hard it became lodged in her skull.

Actually, it's not possible to have a dwarf wearing both leggings and greaves. Both leggings and greaves have the SHAPED tag, which makes it so they're not wearable at the same time. You can have one or the other.

Edit: Ninja'd. +1 to you, sir.

This is correct.

I just tested it and if you tell a dwarf to wear both he'll end up in leggings only, because of the order of dress.

Sometimes my civ doesn't have high boots. Damn lazy mountainhome smiths.

Yup, you are right. Though I'm sure I had this like I said in some of the previous versions, 31 probably.
Thinking about it, maybe SHAPED on chain leggings is a bug in 34 =) I don't see any reason for chain leggings to not behave in the same way as mail shirt (which is perfectly ok under the shaped breastplate). "Chain" and "mail" is effectively the same thing wrt armor

some additional info:

a breastplate will protect very well against a lot of attacks, but only a limited area. The chain shirt "flows" out to cover extra parts. arms, neck, lower body, possibly legs. A masterwork robe will protect pretty much your whole body. Other items have similar tags. It's always difficult finding a mix between coverage and protection, protection and moveability.

Can a cap be worn with a helm? I know wiki says it can, but for some reason my dwarfs put only the helmet on.

This was changed in the new releases. Dwarves can no longer wear both a cap and a helm. It used to be possible to wear a helm and two caps, but not anymore.

I don't know... I never spent candy on clothes.

Really? You can't do that anymore? That's silly. I always vaguely imagined caps being a sort of cervelliere to be worn underneath the helm. I never quite envision what kind of helm it would be though, because I never pay enough attention to what it actually protects.
