This is quite the neat game.

I say that we as much as possible try to spread out as a very sparse network, ridiculously long thin strands. Like fungus. Even if they dig through the earth each individual strand or node will be microscopic.

Following Armok there. When expanding, do it in long, thin strands, possibly with nodules. And of course do it downwards and sideways.

We may create a third crystal, but it's the last we should do before upgrading.

I agree with not making too much crystals at the moment: their main advantage is in energy storage not energy production.

So first turn: 8 loz density downwards.
Next turn: 8 Medium sideways(right and left)

we need 2000 storage, so a single crystal and a bunch of assimilation will suffice (we need one crystal plus 180 worth of storage, that is, 18 low density or 9 medium, or a mix)

Ninja'd:
So first turn: 8 low density downwards.
Next turn: 8 Medium sideways(right and left)
Agree. and third: crystal. then wait a little and throw metamorphosis on.

Cycle 11
Cycle skipped. Image not created.

Energy:
Energy Generation: 1180/cycle
Energy Storage: 30/1400
Metamorphosis Requirement: 2000 Energy stored

Crystals:
Low-Quality Crystals: 2 [100/cycle 500 storage]
Assimilated Low-Density matter: 24 [15][0][1][8] [740/cycle 240 storage]
Semi-Assimilated Medium-Density matter: 8 [240/cycle 160 storage]

Cycle 12
Cycle skipped. Image not created.

Energy:
Energy Generation: 1330/cycle
Energy Storage: 10/1560
Metamorphosis Requirement: 2000 Energy stored

Crystals:
Low-Quality Crystals: 2 [100/cycle 500 storage]
Assimilated Low-Density matter: 24 [15][1][8][0] [650/cycle 240 storage]
Semi-Assimilated Medium-Density matter: 16 [480/cycle 320 storage]

Cycle 13

You have assimilated 8 Low-Density matter and 8 Medium-Density matter and fabricated a crystal. Your energy generation and energy storage is enough to initiate metamorphosis next cycle. Should you choose to do so, you will remain inactive until the restructuring is complete. Your Low-Density matter will age during this time, but you will generate no energy.

Energy:
Energy Generation: 1340/cycle
Energy Storage: 740/2060
Metamorphosis Requirement: 2000 Energy stored

Crystals:
Low-Quality Crystals: 3 [300/cycle 1500 storage]
Assimilated Low-Density matter: 24 [16][8][0][0] [560/cycle 240 storage]
Semi-Assimilated Medium-Density matter: 16 [480/cycle 320 storage]

Crystal Forms:
Spoiler: Low-Quality Crystals (click to show/hide)

Well, we have to do it at some point, so we should just get it over and done with as soon as possible. Metamorphose next cycle.

Cycle 14-???

You collect all the energy you can, and then you shut everything down. Power generation would interfere with what you are doing. You then begin systematically breaking down your assimilated matter and crystals. Carefully naturally, so you could still remain active and wouldnt kill yourself. After that is done, you rebuild it again, slightly differently. And then you break it down again. Rebuilding it again. You repeat this process many times until a small part of you seems to take on a life seperate from you. Cycle 19 It is weak, and easily consumed.

You continue the process. Each time with a more erratic structure, but still stable and sharing your basics. More and more entities begin to spawn from this process. Each time you consume them, and learn how they work. Any improvements that they have, you store. Cycle 44 At one point something else spawns. You attempt to consume it, but it resists. It instead begins to assimilate you into itself. cutting away small pieces while your structure is still weak. You regain your footing, but even after that, it simply overpowers you.

In the end you are down to a single assimilated piece of low-density matter. Before that too is consumed, you wonder if this means death?

Gen 2 Cycle 1 [Cycle 47]

"Not in the strictest sense." Is the answer to the question your predecessor posed. Metamorphosis is always an odd thing to the one who started it. They will(and should) attempt to resist it, even though they themselves started it. The process does show results though.

The new "you" is more efficient in several ways. You can pull extra 5 energy/tick out fully aged assimilated low-density matter. An extra 10 energy/tick out of the now fully assimilated medium-density matter. And you restructured crystals produce 25 energy/tick more. The metamorphosis process also revealed a feature of the medium-density matter, namely it has trace amounts of minerals that can be used for higher quality crystal fabrication. You also assume that you can now assimilate higher-density materials, although you have seen none so far.

But there are also some things that set you farther apart from your predecessor, namely [...]

Metamorphosis could be considered like a traditional "Level Up", as it gives small benefits to your energy generation and unlocks new crystal types, but it also allows you to pick an unique feature, which sets you apart from other "world-eaters". This can be anything from being able to detonate assimilated matter, to having basic locomotion or being able to actually physically see. You may go wild with this, I can think up the specific mechanics.

How about being able to move around matter? That way, you could spread out your crystal network and close off the hole above you while you expand.

I vote making the crystal flexible with some small-ish measure of control over their shape. This is a good thing on two counts because 1) it means we're harder to break and 2) we can make tentacles once we metamorphose again and have enough matter to use in appendages without worrying too much about if we lose it.

I agree with Doomblade, being able to move in a direction besides up would be quite useful. We aren't much of a threat to whoever is up there yet, probably.
