Purpose of civilisation list on embark?
« on: April 11, 2012, 08:47:58 am »

What is purpose of civ list when embarking? I thought it was related somehow to trading, but not enforced strictly, at least in version 0.31.xx, where I had elves visit me after couple of years of not-visiting.  In current version I have only goblins listed as neighbouring civs, too, yet I'm getting visits from human and elf caravans (beginning with second year), not counting dwarven ones. So the list must serve other purpose. Maybe the list shows civs which can besiege my fort or something like that?

Your civ list is buggered then :|

It shows which civs can reach your fortress, not when, and if you're getting civs that couldn't be seen on the civ list... Bugged. Very, very bugged.

Your right, it is related to trading and also to sieges, the civ name with "---" beside it's name will be hostile and attack. I think the order of the civs show which ones are closer.

However like Loud Whispers said you shouldn't get civs that aren't on your civ list...

It also depends on war.  Sometimes you're at war with one elven civ and at peace with another.  You know which one to embark beside.

Well, it seems that's a "good bug" in this case. I'm okay with some aliens visiting me from time to time, even if unexpected. The goblins had the red dashed line indeed, pre-embark, but there were no other civs in the vicinity (the most crowded site I found had goblins, elves and humans, but terrain features were too bad so I embarked near goblins. Goblins are everywhere it seems). The post-embark civ list, under "c" key, also shows kobolds. They have green P, despite trying to rob me. Maybe they are friendly robbers. Elves have four important figures and humans have ten. I suppose the prospector team wasn't too well qualified.

"P" means "not actively at war".  Default hostile civs - namely those with [BABYSNATCHER], [ITEM_THIEF], etc - goblins and kobolds - will always be hostile.  Goblins who are at peace are only slightly different from goblins who are at war.  Elves who are at peace are significantly different from elves at war.

Also of note: [BABYSNATCHER] in the goblin raws makes them send small ambushes.  Elves who are at war will also send ambushes, but their ambushes are the size of a siege and come with mounts.

This is the only big thing I have noticed of why you would even want a choice of civilizations. Sometimes I go looking for a goblin war, so I look around at embarks around goblin fortress that are nearby a dwarven civ. But I have to choose that civilization because a foreign civilization would not be at war. I rarely find a goblin war though, and there seems to be little difference. With my 23 year old fort not at war I get a zombie and goblin siege 1-2 times a year consistently.

The only other thing I have noticed is one civ may not have the same stuff as another when you embark. This can mean a lot if one your starting civ does not have anvils available for instance.

[BABYSNATCHER] is also the tag for ambushes, not only for child-takers, or are there two kind of ambushes - general one, and targeting mothers only? Perhaps I could prevent goblins from making ambushes by keeping mothers inside my fortress.

Goblin war as goblins vs. goblins?

But how to determine whether they have the required things before embarking? Maybe I don't remember that, not embarking too often, but I always learn after the fact. My first civ had no iron anvils, but they had steel ones. Too expensive, so I passed the anvil (they were nice enough to bring one in autumn). My current civ has no access to sand, so I couldn't bring sand bags. But I had to decide on choosing the civ first, before learning that I believe.

A further question on this topic.

I created my world specifically to have four goblin civs, each with 10k goblins in each, in the hopes of eventually having four sieges per year.

So far, of the 4 overlapping goblin civs that showed up in Legends mode, only one is in my (c)ivilizations contact screen.  I specifically embarked on a tile that showed all four in Legends mode.

two questions then...
1) Will I ever see the other goblin civilizations show up in the (c)ivilizations interface?
2) Is what is shown in the historical Legends map an accurate indicator of what to expect in Fotress mode, with respect to sieges?  Multiple goblin civs = multiple goblin sieges per year?

I've had 5 sieges in 3 years, so it's not like I'm not getting sieges, I just expected there to be vastly more, if I really had four angry goblin civs nearby.
