How to: Embark on Kobolds?
« on: April 10, 2012, 05:24:37 pm »

Can anyone suggest a method by which you may found a fortress atop a kobold camp?

Current idea:
Trawl legends mode.
Spam 16x16 embarks until you find the camp.

Well, you could look at the bandit camps or caves on embark.

This is Dwarf Fortress. Where torture, enslavement, and murder are not only tolerable hobbies, but considered dwarfdatory.

I don't know about the open camps, but the caves show up in legends mode, so just check legends mode to see if you've got any kobold caves, then find that cave in the world.

Pretty much this. Find out where the cave is and then embark on it.

Legends viewer is quite good for this because its map is a bit more intuitive, making it easy to pinpoint exactly where a given civilization is located.

Thinking of doing a step by step guide on how to do this with a few illustrations.

Useful to anyone, or waste of my damn time?

That would be PERFECT! Great place to embark for the 'Stranded Scout Party' embark challange. Just make it allowed to cook/eat sentient beings and you'll have a ready food supply!

Sapient eggs are collectable and edible regardless.

"Egg" and "child" are discrete entity types.  Just put a stone nestbox in the kobold den, and chow down.

But what if you want to eat the kobolds, too? I WANT MEAT, NOT JUST EGGS!

Will the kobolds use the nest boxes, being non-tame creatures?

Wild creatures *used* to use them, but I don't know about now. I think toady may have disabled that, due to "wild turkey X500 claims nest box!" And the then endless "urist mcfarmer cancels gather eggs: interrupted by wild turkey hen!" X500!

It used to be that buiding a nestbox caused a mad rush of every egg laying female creature at the embark beelining for it, including cave crocks, giant cave swallows, etc.

To keep that from happening, toady may have simply disabled that "feature."

However, the kobolds are friendly, so they might use the boxes afterall.  Its a good experiment.

Make kobolds tamable/trainable? Then just trap and train! War Kobolds guarding your fort, and all you gotta do is pay them in socks!

Taming has traditionally been very strange when the tamed creature is part of another civ, so I doubt any tame kobolds would be reliable.
