Actually I'm fairly confident that studies have shown that CCTV cameras in the UK have not only reduced crime in various areas, but also helped the police to identify criminals. I don't have any statistics on hand, of course, but it wouldn't be difficult to drag some up. Naturally that may be different in America, but if it works here I'm fine with it.

There's not really much more that can be said about the issue, it's an irresolvable point on contention. Some people are okay with it, some people aren't. I think the most important thing to remember is that the government will only ever get away with what the people allow them to get away with. If there are CCTV cameras it is because the people of the UK as a whole think that CCTV cameras are an acceptable proposal. If phones got tapped, or houses searched without due cause there'd be riots.

As a sidenote, please don't label "europe" the same as "UK" in terms of the cameras.

on a related note, I had been on a visit to Hungary but had to send off a leter just before I left so I still had the stamps with me. On my return, the security wanted to keep them, thought they might be LSD or something.... eh what?

About cameras reducing crimes... Next time you should also ask those cops how much of the footage is actually useable. The number of cameras means nothing if you don't see much. Or when nothing is actually done with the footage. In the netherlands, people have recently gotten arrested based on security images during soccer riots, or other skirmishes. That has made people think again. But if you see lots of cameras but never hear of anyone being arrested because of them, well, not so scary. It's like having a police force that does nothing. "are you not scared the police will arrest you?" No, why should you.

Why would you even want them to bring wagons? So they can haul more cloth? They just plain don't send any wagons in their caravan. And that's fine by me. I don't think the likelihood of them bringing awesome giant animals is that much higher with a wagon anyway.

edit: Apparently one should read the pages of a thread. I didn't realise it was about international travel/security/fine dining now. Oh well.

If it weren't for the US's TSA "pornoscopic examination", complete with manual grope and tickle, I would consider a european vacation sometime.  (That and the absurd costs of international travel...)

*sigh*

Granted it is a travesty, I feel quite flattered when an entire country demands to see my bits in case I'm hiding a WMD >:£

If phones got tapped, or houses searched without due cause there'd be riots.

1. Phones do get tapped
2. Houses searched, not yet
3. There were riots (that devolved into looting sadly)

Actually under the patriot act you can have your house searched and your property siezed without a warrant or even being made aware that it's happened (There is some kind of authorization necessary but it's not a warrant).

OP: The ethic KILL_PLANT is responsible for this behavior. If you feel elves really need to trade:

Set it from what it is to ACCEPTABLE (it ought to be "UNTHINKABLE" if it's elves).
Basically:
[ETHIC:KILL_PLANT:UNTHINKABLE] to [ETHIC:KILL_PLANT:ACCEPTABLE].

The reason for this is that wagons are made of wood, and elves, being totally contrary to the fact that everything else they make is made out of wood, refuse to use wooden wagons. Being contrary to the laws of logic is typical of elves.

The line you need to change is the entity_default.txt file, under [ENTITY:FOREST], if I remember correctly. You'll need to change the file in (dwarf fortress folder)/raw/objects, and not the one for your current save, because you'll need to generate a new world to get it to work.

Non-OP: Wow. Seriously, seriously derailed. I'd be shocked... but this is Bay12.
