How do kobolds choose what to steal?

I have a ton of dead caravans outside as well as a lot of dead military gobbos, yet kobolds never bother taking anything off their body. Do they just completely randomly choose what to take of all the stuff you have? Because in that case all the stuff outside is probably only .01% of what I have thus explaining why none of it is ever touched.

In my experience they try to steal the most valuable object.

Ah well I have like a crap ton of golden trinkets deep in my fortress probably in the thousands, that's probably what they keep walking towards.

I had a kobold get caught in a trap after it was shot in the spine, sadly it died in the cage and so I couldn't place it in the king's bedroom. (he didn't strike me as the necrophilic type)
