Easier way to "extinct dwarven civ"
« on: April 08, 2012, 05:31:47 pm »

So I wanted a hermit challenge.  To do this best, I wanted to kill off the dwarves in worldgen.  I debated how to do this and still have a playable world with elves and humans and goblins, and especially with kobolds.

After much tinkering and modding, I found the key to having no dwarven caravans, liaison, or migrants!

d_init -> Population cap set to 0
entity_default.txt -> Dwarf entry -> remove the tag [ACTIVE_SEASON:AUTUMN]

There will now be a dwarven civilization active and flourishing during worldgen.  But, during fortress play, you will get 2 waves of migrants - these are hardcoded to arrive no matter what - and you will never get a liaison or a caravan from the dwarves.  For all intents and play purposes, your civ is "extinct".

This must be done with a new world, and cannot be undone mid-play.  You can raise the population cap again for migrants, but will never get a caravan.

How interesting. I'm going to experiment with ways to get the little buggers to all die off for reals now, just to see what I can make of it.

I always thought it was a bit odd how they always managed to send a liason on time every time to a small hut on a glacier in the middle of nowhere. On the other side of the world.

Come to think of it I remember playing an extinct civilization before. I just went back and checked the logs I kept for that game and apparantly, despite the civ being extinct, I still got trade caravans.

What about other civs? Why would you rather have no Dwarves and other civs than Dwarves and no other civs?

They dig tunnels but not close enough to your fort to help you.

In my experience, i never had trouble getting at least one extinct dwarf civ. All you need is a good number of dwarf civs (about 4 is good), a decent number of megabeasts, and a decent world age. At least one dwarf civ will end up spawning in a terrible spot surrounded by aggressive enemies and suffer at least one megabeast rampage a year. It also helps that i play fortress defense :) by 100, i'd say about half of the dwarven civs are gone for good.

It turned out to be a very bad idea. Low population was boring. I built a great city only to be inhabited by 4 or so families.

Sounds like it had potential. A skeleton crew wandering lonely halls.
