Dwarves can be so stoopid.
« on: April 06, 2012, 10:12:30 pm »

Seriously. Give a kill order to one lone war cave dragon for a marksdwarf squad (all other invaders seem keen on tracking down the odd tame animal) and what happens? Marksdwarves start flinging bolts at goblins 10x the distance away and even chase them! Result? Dwarves rush out of the front gate to chase them and most die! I mean, seriously, how does a kill order to one lone cave dragon equate to chasing targets nowhere near the target I specified?

This game is fun, but seeing this stupid AI behavior gets on my nerves sometimes...

Explanation: Your gates were open. Your dwarves could see the goblins. That means: TARGET. Dwarves go for the nearest visible target as soon as put into military mode (i.e. active/training, move, kill). The goblins were visible, and closer than the cave dragon. Next time... you could lock the doors. It wasn't stupid AI behavior, really - they were just defending their home - and choosing the closer targets.

Plus, who would want to go up against a dragon?

Maybe I was not too clear lol. The war cave dragon was much closer than the goblins and both were in LOS (goblins were a screen away while the war cave dragon was within spitting distance).

Yeah, that's my thinking. I mean, if that war dragon was RIGHT there in front of their faces when I marked it for a kill order and I suddenly see my squad firing bolts way off screen somewhere, I just have to scratch my head at that.

Yeah... definitely a bug. Do you have a save of it right before it happened, by any chance? (I'm doubtful, but hopeful.)  If it hasn't been reported, it should be, and it would be helpful if you had the save too.

Unfortunately, I don't have a save of it before it happened, but when I get seiged again, I'll try to reproduce the effect.

Your dwarves subsist entirely on alcohol and mushrooms.  Why does this behavior surprise you?

A dwarf's urge to rescue socks from the goblin foes outweigh their desire to kill a dragon.
