I think this giant sponge might be in trouble
« on: April 06, 2012, 04:28:55 pm »

It's got a mantis man attacking it from directly above. I didn't realize flyers could attack down a z-level. I haven't seen the giant sponge even attempt an attack. Can giant sponges attack straight up? Can anything besides missile weapons? I have a feeling this battle is going to last a very long time.

Nothing can attack straight up, not even marksdwarves. As everyone knows all creatures in dwarf fortress have arthritis, thus if they turn straight up to attack, they feel immense pain. Thats why everythign must be one tile away for a attack.

You can attack straight up - confirmed in adventure mode that it is possible when I had a mosquito woman fall atop me (not as sexy as I'd hoped it would be).  But, sponges generally won't attack.

Oh, and I fixed that for you.

This giant sponge keeps getting enraged, then calming down, then getting enraged again. But it hasn't attacked yet. I keep hoping that pieces of sponge will fly off and I can use them as loofahs.

Everyone simply assumes that you can't hurt giant sponges, but you're not thinking outside the box.

Sure, you can't harm them... physically. But have any of you tried a hurtful personal insult? Making fun of its weight, perhaps, playing up its insecurities?

It'll just get enraged.  Then kill you.

The sponge merely has to wait for the Mantis Man to get tired and collapse from exhaustion so that it can push it to death.

On the contrary, you needn't get in striking distance of the sponge to taunt it. Just stand a few feet away and you're perfectly safe whilst you hound it with tales of what you did to its mother in the bedroom last night.

Personally, I would hound it about how I used its mother as a contraceptive appliance, how popular at the fortress she was, given the baby-ban in effect and all, that everyone there wanted a piece of her, and then inquire where its rectangular trousers had gotten to, and how its relationship with a certain 5 appendaged echinoderm was coming along, given that neither have any genetalia to speak of, nor brains with which to have a stimulating conversation.

I would then mention how its mother had recently overcome an extreme infestation of krusty krabs around her bikini bottoms.

A few hours of that, and it should be so hot headed and steamed, that it would dry out completely, resulting in an instant kill.

First migrant wave and the "fight" still continues. The sponge is unconscious, exhausted and pale. The mantis man is unrelenting. I think they are just going to be a permanent feature of my fort.
