Walrus Debate
« on: April 04, 2012, 06:25:02 pm »

I don't believe walri have been added to the game yet; however, I am concerned that they will be incorrectly labeled. I am not sure if the plural of a walrus is walri or walruses; however, like other suffix -us denotions, I imagine it would be walri. My friends, of course, disagree -- I decided to extend this debate onto the Bay 12 forums, in the hopes that conclusive evidence as to the correct plural form could be found.

Walruses. It's not latin based, it's Scandinavian based.

I reference you to the noble octopus, another creature not yet in game. Its plural, multiples of them, is EITHER octopuses or octopi; either is correct, grammatically speaking. I suspect the walrus is the same way, although my gut intuition screams "walruses."

The correct pluralization is "walruses", sorry. And they have been added to the game, actually - I can remember editing their raws. :P They're ingame - you just haven't found them yet.

I am continuously surprised that debates about simple questions like this could exist in the internet age.  Google "walrus plural" and look at any of the dictionary hits you get (ie anything mildly reputable).

Etymologically speaking this is incorrect because octopus stems from a Greek root and so adding the Latin (-i) or english (-es) is technically incorrect but nowadays no one believes in true grammar and etymology anymore :(

English -es is just fine, and is in fact the oldest attested form in english.  We do not speak latin, or greek, and we do not strictly apply latin grammar to latin based words.
