*scoots thread back on topic*

Is it just me or does Notch not really seem to be getting anywhere with this? It might be because I'm not following it very closely, but the only screenshots I seem to see are of differently rendered blocks and little else.

Isn't it still very early in development? He might not have gotten around to creating art assets and stuff yet, and is still working on the code.

I speak from experience that the early parts of these projects are, often literally, nothing to look at.

I guess that's it. If he's going to make something really complicated like emulated CPUs in the game, it probably won't be too pretty even once he's complete that bit. To fit that bit into the game means he has to work out how the CPUs will interact with sensors, weapons, damage systems, drone fighters and all kinds of other things. This is way before a single art asset is made (and He probably doesn't want to underwhelm people by showing too many place-holder testing block).

Programmable CPUs will probably be pretty underwhelming to look at even at release. For a couple of weeks at least, until people start releasing all kinds of funky free (and paid for) programmes for it.

DOS looked like crap, but that had 15 years of replayability once the programs got made :)

The longer we talk about this I get an increasingly sickening feeling that this game will fall horribly short of our expectations. (And I do too post productively you insolant asshats...just...yea.)

Uh, someone mentioned just cubes? He is a bit further along then that.

From their forum (they claim to have gotten these directly from notch):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

e: That looks a hell of a lot better than cubes...

More cubist than just plain cubes. Looks good.

In the future, everyone wears short trench-coats, rolled up parachute pants and funny hats. Accessorizing with bum-bags and wearing triangular prisms as your nipple-piercing attachments is also considered the height of fashion.

"Hey John, watch how much I can make my nip-prisms spin!"

"Nah, I'm better at it!"

(cue nipple-piercing spinning comp in the bottom picture).

I think the more reasonable explanation is that 0x10^c is in canon with Team Fortress 2.

My wavy hand explanation was funnier though. I guess they could be commlinks, air attachments, computer thingies or whatever. You're taking a lot of fun out of the future though............

"Sir, I think we must be going through a gravitational anomaly. My nip-prisms are swaying."

In TF2, funny hats are just a stupid vanity add-on, something pointless. In 0x10^c, keeping an eye on both your own and everyone else's nip-prisms could be an integral and very important part of the game.

There are some nifty programs written in DCPU ASM already. E.g. this astronavigation(?) thingy by Eidako from reddit. You can run it by pasting into emulator like dcpu.ru

Give it a week after release.  If it's halfway as modable as Minecraft then it'll get ripped to shreds by the more code-savvy of the DF forum-sphere.
