One of my biggest questions is would it be possible to get a minecart to dump it's contents automatically.

With or without getting derailed in the process?

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Honestly doesn't matter... It seems de-railed minecarts can be "re-railed", so if minecarts lose their contents when they derail that would be fine by me.

Awesome.  We'll have a dwarven railway after all.  Now to weaponize it to megaproject levels.

You know what would be awesome?  If the plates recognised the weights of different materials in the carts.  You could keep plump helmets going to the food stores and coal going to the forges on the same track

The possibilities for !!FUN!! are now so, so much bigger. But does this mean, for example, that we could have a multi-Z-level fortress that has absolutely no stairways at all, because we'd just connect all the different parts with minecart tracks?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Well you don't need minecarts to make a stair-free fortress, but I certainly see the obsolete tasks being of the highest priorities, such as transporting a Dwarf 2 tiles to the left with the application of iron and axles.

Now that is an idea: create a fortress that STILL WORKS if all of the dwarves have had their legs lopped off, with lots and lots and lots of minecarts.

A fully automated fortress, capable of rending dwarves themselves superfluous.  IT SHALL BE DONE!

They will. From the devlog...

Pressure plates can be given a weight range for being triggered by carts

Toady's only mentioned them differentiating between 'full' and 'empty' so far in the devlogs

I tested it out by making a retracting bridge system that sorted carts by whether or not they were loaded.

He hasn't explicitly stated anything to do with the weight of the cart's load.
