@ThatAussieGuy: I think we have the next dwarven checkerboard. Demons getting squashed by minecarts. It would need some logic systems, though.

Speaking of catapults...

Minecarts might give players the long-hoped-for ability to hurl goblin/troll body parts at invaders.  Kinda like in Tolkien, but with the defenders doing it, rather than the siegers.

Launching corpses at your enemies is an art form of siege craft that has existed far beyond Tolkein's conception

This is a gold minecart. All craftmaship is of the highest quality. This item menaces with spoilers of spoilerite. This item is adorned with hanging fuzzy dice. On this item is a picture of minecarts and goblins in platinum. The carts are flying. The goblins are cringing. The artwork refers to the creation of the first railgun in Utharadol in 1050.
Railguns can be modded in - I know Splint made one. It's freakishly OP - it flings enemies backwards 30+ spaces, and if they hit a wall, they're pretty much liquefied.

As to everything else that's been recently discussed... I get the feeling that Toady One would try to keep the minecarts from being too OP...  And he's explicitly said "no trains", and the dwarves in a row of minecarts roughly qualifies as a sort of crude train, so...
