So, to conclude:
[UBIQUITOUS] will assure me of some unicorns.
Horns won't reanimate.
Zombies are an untapped art form.
Sphalerite still knows everything about everything.

In addition to UBIQUITOUS you could give them a FREQUENCY tag of 100, that would give you even more unicorns by making them spawn on your map more often.

I already plan on tweaking the population counts.  In fact I may release that as a mini-mod.  I might remove a few animal/giant critters, but more likely tune their population WAY down, and tune the population of traditional critters WAY up.  Like, some would become effectively infinite.  One hunter should never be able to empty a forests of deer, so they'd get a population of like 5 million.  Deer men though?  They get a pop of 20, making them easy to cage and enjoy, or to kill and be done with.  And stuff like thrips men and kea men, they get cut out entirely.  Except peach-faced loverbird men.  They get massive population and a frequency of 9001 because they're likely the most adorable of the animal-men.

Also badgers will appear on all biomes in clusters of 200:300 and become booze_guzzlers.

That actually sounds like a fantastic idea.

It has been too long since I've seen some of the happy fun animals from the previous versions, and whilst it's always nice to have new things added to the game I can't help but think that it has come at the expense of a bit of verisimilitude.

I have to disagree with your assessment though, clearly sneezing-baby-panda men are the most cuddly-wuddly animal peoples, though I can't help but feel sorry for the tigermen that the elves tend to enslave.

Well that's not a fair judgement anyways.  Sneezing Baby Panda Men are in a different league.  That's like comparing 7 year old little league to major league pitchers, or comparing elves to Cacame.  It's just not a fair comparison!

As much as I like the idea of new animals, they just seem... misplaced.  Seems like now, every forest is an African forest teaming with different species.  There's no Canadian forests with elk and wolves anymore, they all have keas and giant thrips women and shit.  On Earth, one forest isn't the same as another forest, even on the same continent or the same latitude.  In DF, any forest at any location is identical to any other forest, so you get your elk mixed in with your lemurs.

Either way, I'd like more common "traditional" animals myself.

Copying info on the [UBIQUITOUS] token from the wiki:

I could see that going either way though.  That could mean "Good/Evil creatures ignore this tag" or it could mean "Unicorns will only appear in good forests, even if they're ubiquitous they won't appear in normal forests".

The wiki is also frequently done wrong, so I'd like some proof to this claim either way.

That is also the reason I explicitly stated it was copied from the wiki. I don't want to get flamed for it if it is wrong.
Also, now that I read it again it seems that you would make it so that unicorns would spawn EVERYWERE.  8)

Time to make some use of the training overhaul! :P

Either way I doubt that there's any harm in throwing the Ubiquitous tag onto unicorns. At worst it will just not do anything, at best you'll get the horned marauders rampaging through your lands, looting, raping and pillaging pretty much everywhere.

And who doesn't want that?

Ah yes, the horned marauders raping dwarven settlements like days of yore...

My vote is that [UBIQUITOUS] on a unicorn will make them spawn in all good forests, but only in good forests and not in regular forests.

I would download that mod

My vote goes to every forest. All of them.

I am putting my vote in with the enhatted one, I think GOOD will override UBIQUITOUS to some extent and they'll end up in every good forest.

There's not a particularly effective way of testing it, however.

In this case it would likely be actual ‼Science‼ as I'm very likely to set the unicorn field ablaze as standard issue defense.

Step 1: harvest sunberries
Step 2: make a 1,000x1,000 stockpile of them, no barrels, in front of my fort.
Step 3: Set it on fire anytime anything enters the map.

"Lodom, some migrants have-"
"FIRE Fire Set it all ON FIRE!
