And now I have the unsettling mental image of an elf brooding an egg.

I am pretty sure I saw an image of such a while back.. Or was it perhaps a human?  ???

Don't forget to give them horns, hooves, and shells. :P

What disturbs me most is the image of a male elf trying to lay an egg...

I finally got it working! I think the problem was that I had forgotten to put in [BODY_MATERIAL_PLAN:EGG_MATERIALS] or something like that. I didn't even know that line existed, but I saw it scanning the Chicken raws and putting it in my elves worked. :D

So do they breed normally and just have eggs as a bonus, or do they hatch from eggs?

If they are female, have a CHILD token, and there are males out there to fertilize them (INTELLIGENT creatures need husbands, but if they are just "livestock", then they just need any male), then they can be fertilized if left alone in a nest box.

Otherwise, eggs will be laid but not fertilized, which I assume male elf eggs will do.

They'll still breed as normal, I think. I haven't tried hatching any eggs yet, I just cook them into Elf Egg Roasts. :P

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have to ask...why?
You need to play alot more df.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

To my knowledge, any females who lay eggs cannot give birth to live young. Actually, that's the case for males too, but that's more normal.

So what you should do is give elves an inordinate number of bones. Like, 10 femurs and 15 heads and whatnot. Give them feathers, horns, and hooves. Make them lay eggs EVERY season. Make their blood brewable into expensive liqueor. Their meat should also be edible, and they should also have their size quadrupled (quintupled?) so as to provide more of it. Give them multiple layers of fat.

It'll be like how they made orcs in LOTR, except instead of taking a serene, peace-loving intelligent being in perfect tune with nature and making it into a cheap mass-producable infantry hardwired for hysteric loyalty (Just got a new idea for elf engineering), we will be taking that and making it into the perfect sentient herd animal and beast of burden, bred solely for dwarven luxury and convienience.

Dwarven soilent green would be people, except that elves aren't people.
