I learned to play DF in half an afternoon at college, and someone could pick it up even faster I bet.

Guys really, it's not the game. It's the interface. DF in fortress mode is for all realistic purposes not much more complicated than Tropico. Just it's much more OBTUSE than most games since there's almost no tangible feedback for certain actions and to say the game has an interface at all (And not an obvious placeholder) is a damn lie.

Indeed, DF's difficultly lies in learning how to learn to learn to play. People just get turned off by how difficult it is to do so.

What is a real shame is the direction it's headed.

I learned to play DF, enjoyed it for some time to a degree, since it wasn't too hard to play. But ever since the military update and the resulting new interface I simply cannot bring myself to tackle it. DF has passed the line of required player effort to enjoy for me. I could go back to just before that update if I wanted to, but the only reason I enjoyed it back then was because it was something new. Now... even the older versions are too much effort tackling the interface for me to enjoy what is underneath, I have plenty of other gaming options that provide rewarding gameplay without nearly as many annoyances.

Try again when the army arc is here. I know, right now that looks like a really long ways off, but I haven't even started on the military at the moment because the interface is so counter-intuitive. I believe a better interface is on the list, however.

I must say that although a lot of DF's charm comes from its ASCII graphics, the fact is that the fact that it is ASCII (besides the fact that Toady and Threetoe can't do graphic design, I assume) is that higher-level forts are astonishingly hard on your processor, and making them render real graphics would just make the problem a lot worse. That's not so in the case of the military interface, when you're not looking at the fortress and the game is paused, so there's nothing to render in real-time. Toady and Threetoe could very conceivably try and find a graphic designer to make the military interface a hell of a lot more intuitive- it wouldn't have any adverse effect on the game.

Clearly I've never played against gold and silver league players who didn't build anything-not so much as a probe or a drone-for more than a minute into the game. Clearly I've never played against gold and silver league players who don't tech and send small waves of lings or rines at my main every couple minutes until I make them give up by killing two buildings and some SCVs. Clearly I've never played against gold and silver league players who take ten or twenty seconds to react to an attack, and who apparently just issue an attack order and watch the battle. Assumptions are fun, aren't they?

The point being that a moderately talented chimp could get into gold or silver league if it bothered to try.

If DF had full on tool tips, I think the game would be at least 50% easier to take in. I got the hang of navigating the game on my own, but I did spend a good week reading wiki articles after that. But that's because I wanted to know. There's a crap ton of information that you can disregard when you're getting into DF for the first time.

I would like to point out that even though I understand Dwarf Fortress, I don't play it nearly as much as one would think. Sure, I have a little fun when a big update comes out, but I never really keep playing it.

You have to keep in mind that, even if they do understand the game, they still may not even like it. Sometimes its just a matter of personal preference. No offense, but I think the OP may be just fanboying over Dwarf Fortress, not realizing that people may just not like the game. The actual stupid people in this situation are the people who can't comprehend that someone MAY just not like what they like.

No, it requires some skill, or you really faced only noobs.
I have seen some wonderful diamond league players. Its glorious to see two great players to battle each other to death. (No im not great, just watched some replays) I always had unluck i couldnt get away from bronze league in solo. Becouse i didnt use hotkeys. You need hotkeys to win.
And yes Starcraft is serious business,  if you say it requires no skill, go into diamond league and be top 10 or win any serious contest or get into top 3 at least.
