Words that are not in the dwarven language, but should be.
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:37:45 am »

While attempting to come up with good fortress names...

Why in the heck is "Goblin" or "Goblins" not available in the vocabulary list?  I mean, dwarves kill goblins so often there should be a word for them, right?
I can't find "Enemy" or "Foe," either.

I couldn't find a dwarven word for "oath," either.  Although, since I think that ETHIC_LYING is set to "Personal Matter" for dwarves, that may be a cultural thing for them.

There is no dwarven word for "victory".  While that makes sense (since the dwarves have never experienced it), there is also no word for "defeat".

Nobody ever survives long enough to come up with a word for it.

If you don't know victory, how can you know defeat? Getting acquainted with the wrong end of a spear may not be defeat for the dwarfs, only death for that individual.

I was noticing such things as I was naming the clans in my fortress.

They can only count to three.  Each hand, and their mouth?

They have a word of "first" and none for "second" or higher.  Perhaps this is because everyone wants to be the first to grab something or to run out the door when there is danger, and everyone else is just "not first", or maybe "first now" (that the one ahead of me is done).

"First" is "uthar", which makes a very nice name for the founders: MacUthar.

Actually, it doesn't make sense, as the Safir-Whorf Hypothesis has been nearly entirely Debunked but Toady isn't a linguist, so....

There should be a dwarven word for Urist.

The languages are kind of odd in any case; Goblins for example have nothing about anything pretty and nice. Dwarfs have very little bad or evil stuff, and Elves only have those hippy titles. And Kobolds sometimes have Dutch names. :P

All race names (unless you count 'othob' to mean dwarf) and animal names, although that may be because not all mods have them, and calling someone Dwarf or Elf in a world without them wouldn't necessarily make sense.

More words for violence, such as kick, smite, hurt, maul, slash... things you'd use in goblin or adventurer names.

All languages have all the existing words, the entities just have different priorizations for using them in names.

This word is forbidden, because every fortress would have the word in its name :)
