Top 10 most useful skills
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:13:31 pm »

Jack has a problem. He's stuck with six useless roommates who do nothing but play with their sticks all day. What are the ten skills he should learn so he can best keep things together?

My poor jack will be doing all the work in the fort as long as is plausible, and I want to give him only one point in 10 different skills. For interests sake, what would you choose as the ten skills?

Putting a single point in a skill is almost entirely pointless. What you'd end up with is a jack of fuck all.

I've done this-- run an embark with a single dwarf until the migrants arrive.  I made him a proficient miner, though-- probably the most important work is getting a bit of space dug, and a bit of rock comes in awfully handy as well.

Miner, Mason, Carpenter, Brewer, Planter-- then, I dunno.  Stonecrafter, for pots.  Clothier, for a rope for a well.  Weaver, for cloth for the rope for the well.  Mechanics, for the entrance (and any gew-gaws you feel like building, I always feel like building a lot).  Leatherworking, for bags.  Cook, maybe, for number ten.  (Wouldn't be surprised if you want to additionally enable wood burning, butcher, tanner, and of course building designer.

Note that this list is really different from the list of skills that are important and hard to train.  I'd much prefer a legendary armorsmith to a legendary stonecrafter.

#1 farmer. Without one you *will* starve to death.
#2 brewer. Sobriety in dwarves is a bad bad thing.
#3 carpenter. You need beds. Can also make bins and barrels.
#4 woodcutter. You need wood to make beds
#5 miner. You need to get your dwarves into a secure environment, and fast.
#6 clothier. Dwarves now require clothing, or they go bonkers.
#7 thresher/spinner. You need thread to make cloth.
#8 weaver. You need cloth to make new clothes.
#9 mason. Many structures require stone blocks, and parts only a mason can make.
#10 metalworker/blacksmith. You need new equipment someday.

Suggestions:

Miner + Mason = dwarf #1
Spinner/thresher + weaver + clothier = dwarf #2
Metalworker + furnace operator = dwarf #3
Brewer + farmer = dwarf #4
Woodcutter + carpenter = dwarf #5
Appraiser + judge of intent + conversationalist + architect = dwarf #6
No skills = dwarf #7

That's for a reasonably well balanced starting set.  Miners and woodcutters get bonuses in that picks and axes they carry double as weapons.

You can't have a single dwarf doing both jobs, because the game won't allow it.

1. Miner
2. Miner
3. Miner
4. Carpenter/Mechanic
5. Farmer/Wood cutter
6. Mason
7. Stone crafter/Manager

Mix up the miners' other skills to your liking. You do not need high level skills into any of the farming skills (like butchery, brewery) except for planting. If you bring enough alcohol, you don't need a skilled brewer.

True... if I can compartmentalize the experience in a historical/anthropological/scientific framework, it ceases being sexual, and stops being repulsive.

One of the freakishly odd things about my unusualy "3rd" sexual preference maybe? (Shrug)

Everyone tackle hug wierd.

Anywho since he's supposedly supplying the stuff for 6 military dwarves, I'd say:

- Farming
- Weaponcrafting
- Armorcrafting
- Masonry
- Carpentry
- Mechanics
- Clothesmaking
- Mining
- Architecture
- Stonecrafting (pots)

And stuff you need done but don't need skill points in for any reason whatsoever:

- Brewing
- Weaving
- Woodcutting

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I usually have:

- Mason, Miner, Metalsmith
- Mason, Miner, Engraver
- Woodcutter, Carpenter
- Woodcutter, Carpenter
- Stone-, Wood-, Metal- & Bonecrafter
- Cook, Brewer, Farmer
- Expedition leader (later assigned architechture, butchery and tanning, often also animal training)

Rest of the jobs can be assigned on migrants.

Mining, farming, brewing, carpentry, stonecrafting, mechanic, weaponsmith, armorsmith, judge of intent, appraiser.

Bet you can do a fort on these only.

what do you need judge of intent for?

might as well add a point in student if that helps to speed up the learning of, well, everything.
