Crossbows - the training weapon of hammerdwarfs?
« on: March 27, 2012, 01:12:41 am »

before i give myself a headache over this i figured i might ask if anyone has gotten a headache over this before - if you equip a competent hammerdwarf (with no other weapon combat skills) with a crossbow, will he spar with it?

Uhh, probably not. Why would you? Copper warhammers are the second most effective, and easy to make.

Maybe I'm just overlooking it all the time, but I don't think I've ever seen marksdwarves spar.  Even when they're given a barracks and have it set to train in, I don't think I've seen them spar.

For that matter, not sure what all they do train to do.  Don't know if they do individual drills either, that's taken up by target practice I think, at least some of the time.  They may only hold and watch demonstrations.

wooden xbows with no bolts assigned would train your hammerdwarves on something without killing it too quickly.  Better if you have featherwood or something else light ofc.

Don't always have access to copper, or metal at all.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Set them upon a captured flesh ball (a.k.a. Dwarven Punching Bag).

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I've never had trouble getting a dwarf to drop even a weapon that he named.

wait NOW i remember why i wanted hammerdwarves to train with hammers - to beat on an armored, unarmed POW for 5 straight minutes.
