I enjoyed the milking and shearing before pastures were introduced.  I kept all of the chattels on ropes, in large rooms, so I could selectively breed them for meat as well as milk and/or wool.  Pastures have made me stop keeping grazing beasts.  I hate having them starve because the grass didn't grow back, or offspring grew up and ran off to the dining room.

Then keep pigs? Zat is what I do.

Shearing/spinning is only really useful for wool strange moods.

Currently I don't think wax is  part of the strange mood system? If Toady changes that then I can see a lot of players panicking because their mooding metalcrafter wants wax, but they didn't establish a beekeeping industry early enough. (Kind of like turtle shell moods in the current release.)

Having wax become part of the mood system would make bee keeping more useful.

I can see myself modding cartilage to be [WAX], and having someone create an artifact carving of some historical event in turkey cartilage. :D

Keeping pigs is a good idea.  I wonder if they give hair when they are slaughtered.

rendered fat (tallow) and wax should be interchangeable in a mood, though the wax would be more expensive. After all there used to be tallow and wax candles, but wax candles gave a brighter and more steady flame with less smoke.

I wonder if ornate candelabras will ever be implemented.

I hope Toady adds food moods some day; I would love to swing a forgotten beast brain mace, or sleep in a plump helmet bed!

And suddenly they start rotting. But because artifacts can't be destroyed they'll simply produce miasma ever after.

Would still be awesome for a mace (plague censer!) but the bed would be nasty.

Wouldn't the bed start to ferment and thus start giving off foul-smelling, ethanol-laced fumes ? Sounds like the ideal dwarf bed to me!

I doubt it. Turning a plump helmet into alcohol requires a barrel and voodoo magic. Leaving a plump helmet in a bedroom just creates a smelly mess.

Unfortunately they do not, so if you were hoping to get a pasture-free thread industry from animals you're going to have to look elsewhere.

Still, they provide milk and plenty of food, and since you can lock them all in a small room without much worry of death or starvation they're a handy creature to have around.

Another benefit of shearing vs buying cloth from the caravan. You get to masterfully dye the thread, and weave it into masterful cloth that can be used to make pretty valuable trade goods vs you buy (low quality cloth), that if it has any dye on it is done in a (low quality kinda way).

I have my herd started.   :)  It's not surprising that they don't give hair when they are slaughtered.  The only thing I can recall being made of pig hair is boar bristle brushes, and I think that comes from the tail.

Each hive produces something like one unit of honey per year, and unless your map is covered in wild hives, you can't raise enough to be even remotely worthwhile.  If you muck about in the raws, however, you can up that to 5 units of honey per season, add bumblebees as hiveable (so you can get your field of hives set up sooner), or even add ants as hiveable.

As for pig wool, there are about three extant wooly pigs, collectively called Mangalitsa (or -tza, or -ca).  I've never found any reference to them being sheared for wool.  Their main purpose is that they produce a lot of superior quality lard (though take longer to mature), and their wool makes them more cold tolerant (and very cute).  Knowing swine, I suspect that the wool would always smell of pig, which is not the nicest of smells.

Perhaps you could mod them in, and make them shearable.  Is there anyway to change butchering returns in a creature, so that it would give, say, twice as much fat and half the meat?  Also, is there a way to specify the value  of specific parts, so that they could have fat 2-3 times the value of ordinary pig fat, but cheap low quality wool?
