Hunter not hunting

So I'm at a loss now. I have a dwarf with Hunting labor checked, no other labors checked, he has a crossbow equipped, a leather quiver equipped, military ammunition set to 100 bolts, and I have several bone/copper bolts lying around - he has none equipped. His job is currently nothing and I've tried disabling the labor and reactivating it. What else could I missing? He has no experience in hunting or ambushing but that shouldn't stop him, right?

You said military ammunition.  What bolts have the hunters been assigned? :D

Are there any huntable aminals on the embark at present?

Sorry, that's what I meant. Under military, hunters are assigned 100 bolts. I tried putting him in my military too (inactive) with 100 bolts with no change.

I'm not entirely sure that those do count, actually. In fact I'm leaning towards them not counting at all.

Well, hopefully something comes along because he hasn't done anything in a while. 8P And I tried enabling the labor from both. 0.34.06

anythin with the extra man or woman will not be hunted unless you edit the raws.

Should he at least have bolts equipped by now, or will he when something pops in? He has never picked up bolts. I've tried dumping them and then storing them.

Edit: There are currently Giant Bushtits, he is doing nothing.

Can he reach the giant bushtits? Fliers can cause havok for hunters.
