Yeah, but the part of Uncanny valley DF sits in is populated by things that defy all logic, softening the insanity of how real it is.

And who cares? This is a game where insane people can do insane things in a semi-realistic environment while munching booze roasts, solely for the sake of doing insane things.... And of course openly disregarding the laws and customs of war using localized WMDs and tossing POWs down 1000+ foot tall towers for fun.

If we shouldn't care about details then why the fuck are we playing?  Why does Toady bother piecing together every creature, stone, sock and cat into the code?  If you're just going to sit there and say "My forgotten beast is an ass, your argument is invalid" then you are preventing the game from progressing.  Get helpful, get constructive, or get out.

Luckily Toady doesn't falter to the likes of you, who would say "This is a fantasy game, I demand nothing make sense."

Not what I meant. I meant to mean Things have made so little sense in the past(Single soap columns holding up forts and living creatures composed of unliving matter spring to mind, though the latter is more a quirk of the RNG) why would the spiders running off the smaller CS code making webs seem so unreasonable? Please pardon me if I offended.

Namely because a cave spider isn't defined.  Sure, it's in the raws, but there's nothing in real life to actually compare it too.  It's like claiming that a Dratha is too small.  Compared to what?  There's no real Drathas (that I know of) so you can't claim anything.  Cave spiders don't exist, so no one can argue that they produce too much or too little silk.

Brown Recluse do exist, they're based off a real creature.  That spider is extremely small and produces such little amounts of web as to be non-existent.  You can compare it to a real event and say "this doesn't match up."

Soap pillars are a limit of the code, stone FB are fantasy flavor, but brown recluse webs are something that can be modded with the player's hands, and could be done much better by Toady, and isn't super-work-intensive.  He'd only need to add a partial thread count, so that 10x webs produce 1x cloth.  It's a comparatively easy change that would add to realism, but much like stone densities it's something that's easy and overlooked.

Well pardon my ignorance then. I'm just gonna chalk it up to what was there beign continual buildup over time rather than just pooping out the webs.

I apologize for my indescretion.

That may be a valid idea, but it sounds like they drop them constantly, with no time to "buildup".  Not to mention that the brown recluse can't buildup enough web to dump all at once, it's just not big enough to store it.

There are several types of spiders that like to live in caves. Pick one and call it a cave spider.

I always thought cave spiders in general (DF ones) were just very prolific webspinners that used thier webs as territory markers or something. Cause obviously they're something cats can kill quite easily. I just picture an annoying little eight-limbed bity thing that spins webs to mark territory and catch prey at the same time.

And cats/dwarves happen to trample these dreams of expansive territory.

Which is the root of the issue here.  You can imagine cave spiders however you like, but a brown recluse has a concrete nature.  It should attempt accuracy and adhere to that nature, or admit that it won't and rename it something fantasy.

If there were a tag that dicated web spinning, I'd say just rip that out. Then that'd solve the problem. Conversly, jack up the material value to represent said novelty. Either way it won't require a regen.

Alas, I doubt there's a tag controlling that little issue. Just beat me with the dumbass mallet now.

I don't think there's a tag to control the speed of weaving, it either is or is not a weaver.

That's what I meant; just take off the weaver tag to represent its small webs (which would likly get trampled into nothingness by dwarves/cats/whatever anyway.)

Technically, this is unrealistic (although potentially overlookable given that it is a fantasy creature), as web-spinners actual expend something up to a third of their bodymass in building the material for their webs.  The webs are so "costly" from a biochemical energy standpoint that spiders cannot afford to abandon a web and spin a new one without risking starvation - they need to eat at least part of their old webs, in order to recycle the precious proteins that make up the web.

For spiders to be able to afford the protein costs of making enough webs to expand a collection of webs outwards, they would have to be extremely prolific hunters, or otherwise have a very rich protein source from some unusual means, which shouldn't realistically exist in a cave (although caverns are far from realistic...)

Going just a weeee bit overboard, here, Girlinhat...

I always thought cave spiders would supplement their diets with the various fungi that resides within the caverns, due to the scarcity of prey they are able to catch. But where never able to become entirely reliant on the fungi due to a lack of variety in the amino acids the fungi would provide.
