You still want my service?
I haven't heard of any other trouble here.
Could you inform me with some more details?

William itches at his neck.
"Diplomacy and spy work in a nation i'm allied with."

In Ligoria:
William stepped up to the gate and looked at the guards.
"I have a meeting with Kathos Thunderblade."

There were two guards outside. The one to William's left spoke in a bored voice.

"You may go in. Leave your weapons to the guards inside and go to the council chamber. The Lord Chancellor will speak with you there."

He had not realized who William was.

"Of course not. I'd knew you would take some convincing. So, what are yourdemands, your conditions that you require before you do aid me?"

She laughs a little "Demands?" She thinks for a moment, [2] "Why would I betray my country and help the Traitor Queen? It would likely benefit me more to simply kill you and drag you back to Talama myself. I'm in a generous mood though, how about I simply ignore you and we continue on our campaign. I control the vast majority of the military currently. You could likely make it inside the city alone and deal with Lord Kathos I guess."

Start establishing a town and search for the lands of any unaligned nobles nearby

[2/3] Your men don't find any usable land, not because there isn't any, but apparently they kept getting distracted and never really made it far from camp. Additionally, they didn't happen to find much in the way of other people in the area either. A few hermit farmers, but nothing large enough or social enough to warrant conversion to your efforts.

[3] You manage a decent base of operations, mostly just a large cleared area with camps set up for your men. It'll make a great foundation if you can manage to gather some peasantry to support your endeavors.

-Without releasing the name or identity of his spy, Terryn informs Lizzy of the current going-ons re: Dissidents being funded by an outside Lord. He requests that she not contact William, for fear of the courier being compromised while the trap is still being laid.

-If the Blacksmith can be found, he is to be arrested for vagrancy or some other small crime which might be punished with arrest.

[6] Lizzy agrees to keep mum for now. She will, however, let William know of your orders after the events conclude.

The blacksmith isn't hard to find. He was one of the largest in the city prior to the Drydock issues. Seems he made the vast majority of his income from supplying the dock with replacement parts for ships. Now he's reduced to horseshoes and other benign activities. [4/2] You could certainly trump up some charges against him, but given his position in town it might look suspicious. Your call...

Research for appropriate stone design, then thave it cut and polished to design. Request meeting with Cain.

[5] Material on hand and within the library at Shola contains various geological information regarding the shape of stones and their applications for abnormal usage. Given what you could glean and after a few trials you seem to find a few shapes that will retain a larger portion of energy for a longer period of time than a raw hunk would.

[3] Cain, being a busy man, sends an advisor to your lab to determine what you want and if it's applicable for a face to face meeting.

"My Lord has sent me to you. I hear you have some interesting activities and research projects. To what degree would they require My Lord's hand of involvement?"

"What I would request is of very... specific nature and something that Lord Cain must know of. I'm in need of manpower. Slaves, criminals, undesirables. All the people that will not be missed or aren't of great worth to anyone. Experiment that I'm currently involved in requires... a lot of test subjects or so to speak. A few hundred people or so.

Now, while I understand that this sounds absurd and ridiculous, it would be silly of me not to tell Lord Cain about it and to try to obtain these...."candidates" myself. It involves no death magic or blood sacrifice, honest. I'm merely working on ... "technical applications and feasibility of high energy states drawn from bio-spiritual source and contained in  crystal lattices "
.

Phew, that bit of technobabble might confuse the fellow and get me the meeting.

"Watch out for things happening, carry out my orders, yadda-yadda, i'm sure there will be some people you can kill."

There were two guards outside. The one to William's left spoke in a bored voice.

"You may go in. Leave your weapons to the guards inside and go to the council chamber. The Lord Chancellor will speak with you there."

He had not realized who William was.
William says nothing, following the orders without fuss or problem, besides to warn the Guard who he gave Zerim to not to lose or steal it, lest there be problems.
He steps into the council chamber, straightening out his coat and armor, looking bored.

Kathos was talking with a merchant when William entered. He turned towards the lord of Polca, looking rather angry to be interrupted in the middle of a business meeting, but as soon as he recognized who had just arrived, he calmed himself. He said a few words to the merchant in a foreign language - from the tone, it was easy to guess that it meant "get out of here".

The Lord Chancellor did not look like the man who had once plotted against the queen of Ligoria to limit the Crown's power in the kingdom. The man standing over the council table looked older, more mature - there were hints of gray in his beard and his hair, and he had not shaved in weeks. There was also a change in his attitude - he always appeared slightly annoyed. These days, Kathos Thunderblade was almost always in a bad mood. Although he was polite at all times when discussing politics, his smile and his sweet tone never reached his eyes. When he spoke, he sounded tired.

"William. I sent you a letter early in spring to tell you that I needed your help, and four months later you finally arrived. You told me in your letters that problems with bandits would delay you. May I know what happened?"

William shrugs, chewing at the inside of his cheek, glancing at Kathos with a frown. He delivers the next words in perfect deadpan, not even once changing his mood of sullen boredom.

"A riot caused by a mage. I need to stay to keep Polca under my control...Plus Laythe was being annoying to me, swear she was trying to get the crowd to kill me...Holy Hell of Samhain, are you ill, Kathos?"

Kathos closed his eyes once William finished talking. He was not serious. Of course not. He never was.

"I'm sick of it all, William. Laythe's madness and Nikephoros's blood lust... They are driving me mad... Laythe was in Polca?"

William shrugs, yawning as he leans against the wall, his guards moving to flank him.

"Yup, tying to turn me traitor with political marriage. Might have worked if she didn't flee to Shola. She's...I think...thanks to one of my sources, around or near Ligoria."

He blinks.

"I probably should have mentioned that first, right? So you can prepare the army and make sure she don't turn any old Loyalists to her side..."

"So we have Alaria in the countryside with most of the army and Laythe trying to make her join the loyalist cause. And Alaria's loyalty to Ligoria isn't worth a bit of dirt, thanks to the other madman. Do you know what Laythe's plan is when she reaches the city?"

William shrugs.

"Think she wanted me to open the gate for her, probably murder you and anybody who wasn't on her side, generally cause chaos or something...and you not changing mood is very, VERY interesting. I was half-expectin' you to try and kill me."

"You just proved that you were on my side, William. By revealing that information, you just gave me victory. I had won a war before Laythe was ten. She's psychotic, paranoid, she has no sense of leadership and my dogs know more about strategy than she does. Now she lost one of her last two advantages - surprise. She will not be able to take this city by storm or siege."

There was something dark in his voice when he said that. And a second after, his tone changed to a more calm, casual one.

"I was considering to make you Lord Protector of Ligoria, William. Are you interested to get the post?"

Find a secluded place and experiment on the (probably meager) power storage of the various rocks Eurika collected earlier.

There was probably no possibility that mundane stones would hold as much power as, say, a hunk of iron, but thoroughness was paramount.

William watches Kathos, grinning, as he pushes himself off the wall with an elegant movement.

"To tell you the truth, Laythe's offer of Kinghood was very nice. Too bad she didn't back it up at all, not even a glance of what's under that armor...Damn shame about her madness, she's pretty easy on the eyes...And I can be Lord Protector if you want me to, but before I can whip the army into shape and get rid of Deplum or whatever, i'll need to return to Polca to destroy the Black Regiment. And most likely beat some mouthy general's faces in."
