Suspicious dwarf is... suspicious.
« on: March 18, 2012, 07:51:20 pm »

So, I got my first migrant wave, and one of the new dwarves had a kill. It said "Unknown creature". I think it's hiding something, but he isn't a vampire because he got hungry when I locked him in my interrogation chamber. So, is he clean? Or a were creature?

Probably a glitch, like when caravans bring barrels of "liquid".

+1 to the scorecard for paranoia.  Toady has made a masterstroke of design with vampires in disguise.  The amount of rampant paranoia is delicious.

Have you tweaked any raws?  I seemed to recall that that sort of issue could arise if things changed.  Like... there was a similar issue where an animal in worldgen would kill something, and legends would report "The Toads have given the name SuperBadger the Badger of Badgering to the Giant Badger."  This is because the first file in the raws is alphabetical "Annelids" and the first entry is "Toad".  The game has nothing to draw on for support, so it'll grab the first creature it can find.

Similarly, it's possible that some creatures died or otherwise suffered existence failures and the game drew a blank.

I'd think the dwarf probably killed a historical figure that got culled.

Dwarven economics are still in the experimental stages. The humans have told them that they need to throw a lot of money around to get things going, but every time the dwarves try all they just end up with a bunch of coins lying all over the place.

That basically just means it's a historical figure that once got in a fight.

It may have killed something like a werecreature, or maybe it was a scout or something and killed some random weasel.

A kill is nothing to worry about.  1,000 kills is a vampire.  Also, as long as they keep dwarf hair amulets by the hundreds, vampires are going to be easy to identify with a glance.

I had a dwarfHuman (modded civ) with a couple of dozen elf hair/nail amulets which i decided to ignore since i couldn't find which page lists a creatures kills, so i assumed that creature had no kills therefore no page...
Well later i found a dwarf Human on my missing list so i kinda assumed he was blood sucked and had gone missing, i rechecked this dude and found he had
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
so i quickly assigned him a prison/hole in the ground. Checking the medical page i found a Feint Dwarf Human who seems to have survived the feeding.
Oddly enough i searched around for ths missing guy and found him, a green @ symbol in a lake outside, it was that damn Diplomat who went missing immediately on my first year, The one that gave me a message "the engraver blah blah from blah blah, has come" which i thought was a were creature since i had literally never seen that message before.
So er, i should facepalm but that Liason made me notice the vampire, so cheers.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.
