Axe Lord Flipped out!!
« on: March 15, 2012, 02:05:15 pm »

On a whim, I decided to slaughter the dwarven caravan with my 2 legendary and extremely seasoned axe lord. Both have full adamantine armor and battle axes. The caravan was slaughtered, I cancelled their orders. Instead of going back to train in the barracks, they started killing my own dwarfs! They are ecstatic on their murdering rampage! They both don't really care about anything anymore.

Probably a loyalty cascade. Fort over, goodbye

Yep, loyalty cascade.

This term denotes a phenomenon that you've run afoul of. When a creature kills a member of a civilization, it becomes an enemy of that civilization. It will then attempt to kill any further members of that civilization it encounters, and any members of that civilization that encounter it will attempt to kill it. Dwarven caravan merchants are members of your dwarf civilization, as are all of your dwarves, so now that axe lord is an enemy of the State.

What's worse is that everything I just mentioned is also true for groups (basically, sub-sections of a civilization). That axe lord, despite being an enemy of the civilization, is still a member of your fort's group, so if anyone else kills him, they'll become an enemy of your group, so all of your other citizens will attempt to kill/be killed by them. And since the original axe lord's killer is still a member of the civilization at large, anyone who kills them will become an enemy of the civilization, and thus will attempt to kill/be killed by all of the members of your civilization (i.e. everyone else in your fort).

So basically, unless you can kill your newly-psychotic axe lord through some means that doesn't involve any other dwarf getting the kill, you'll just have a full-on civil war until all of your dwarves are dead or divided into 2 camps, one composed of enemies of the civilization members of the group, the other composed of enemies of the group members of the civilization, and any dwarf (such as migrants) will be attacked by both, and if they manage to survive the attack they'll be inducted into the ranks of the group that didn't attack them.

I like to think of this as an unintended feature to punish players for ordering their dwarves to commit acts of treason - a proper response would be to start getting endless Dwarven sieges (every season, guaranteed, or maybe even have Dwarven soldiers start arriving at the map edge continuously like wildlife), but that'd probably be difficult to implement.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I like how this is titled "Axe Lord Flipped out!!", as if it was HIS fault that things went the way they did. You had them kill a dwarven caravan. Are you surprised?

I think it is, while it may be a bug, also working as intended. Attack your civilization ? The other non-military are outraged and revolt. See dwarven ethics - the dwarves consider rightfully the military as murderers. What is the penalty for murder ? Death penalty. So however outmatched the civilian dwarves are, they STILL are morally upright enough to attack traitors.

WHY. Why did you have to put a link to TVTropes in?

That would make sense, except for the other half of the loyalty cascade. Attacking those supposed traitors is itself treasonous, as it turns the attacker into an enemy of the group. Also, why would people who attack one member of the civilization then decide to attack all others, even their friends and family?

Loyalty cascades, or something like them, could be made into a legitimate feature, but as is it's just an unintended consequence of the allegiance system.

Why do people like TVtropes. I find it boring as all hell.

I've gone on WIkipedia sprees before, but I never feel the urge to click on more TVtropes, or even to click on the first one.

so, he's only got 2 dwarves left who will auto-kill any migrants who show up?

If these 2 were a mated male and female and they produced offspring, what would happen to it?

Do soldiers still become permanent military when reaching high enough weapon skill?  If so then these guys will never be able to produce more food for themselves and they will also kill any new migrants who come to the fort.  It looks like the only way to salvage this without abandoning and reclaiming is to lock the axelords away until they starve to death and hope that some migrants show up before they die, otherwise it's automatic abandonment if there are no dwarves left in your fort.
