I am both offended and tickled by this post.

I think the intent was more warding off the incredibly popular opinion of southerners being militant right-wing hicks(You have to go to Virginia for that), rather than providing a single perspective for several states and hundreds of thousands of people.

For the "South=Right wing hicks with guns": True in that a lot of people own guns and go hunting. Not true in that most of them are normal human beings who happen to enjoy hunting instead of sitting in Starbucks with a Macbook, getting completely smashed, or playing video games. Mostly it's just deep fried everything (arguably more deadly) and occasionally a undertones of the jeebus.

Think about it, a lot of the country is still anti-russia/communist. And they never even did anything.

Alright, that's just plain wrong. The USSR was the USA's opponent in the Cold War, which definately qualifies as "doing something" given that the Cold War was a long-played attempt to gain political, military, and economic hegemony over as much of the planet as possible.

Ok, I worded that badly. What I meant to say was they did not kill anyone or attack the united states. At least not openly. For the US, or at least this is my perception, 9/11 is seen as worse than the cold war, because they attacked and killed americans on their own turf.

As an Englishman living in Australia, I feel I must provide both the European and Australian perspective on this: we all think it sucks.

And I provide the perspective of Turkey: According to a poll (dunno how many people), %42,5 of the Turkish citizens think US is a threat to world peace so stuff like this doesn't have much of an effect on our opinion of US.

There hasn't been a single long-term war where something like this hasn't happened. People snap under the strain of facing a lethal threat day in and day out. Trying to blame this on "propaganda" or "eeeeeeeeevil americans" is, at best, appallingly ignorant.

No, it must be because we're evil Americans who like to murder people for profit and/or shits and giggles. 


But of course the U.S. is involved in high-profile wars almost all the time and often tries to claim the moral high ground, which to my mind is the most absurd thing about it. Saying that you're more moral than your opponent because you only violently kill them in certain ways, or because you are supposedly killing them for the benefit of their families and neighbors is silly enough, but even more so when it is a lie. If it were another nation in the position the U.S. is in, everything would be exactly the same, except for the nationality in the headlines.

You could begin to blame it on fighting a "long term" war with no clear goal or purpose, though.

IE: If this kind of thing happens in every single long-term war, then we are to some extent responsible for starting and continuing said long-term war.
