Games that are good without audio (and on a laptop)
« on: March 11, 2012, 11:56:58 pm »

So I recently broke my audio on my laptop. I figure I may as well just do some games that don't need audio and can work on a laptop until a USB audio device comes in the mail. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720, which comes with an Nvidia 8600M GT. Dwarf Fortress is a no go, it's way too slow on this machine. If it's at all possible to get Dwarf Fortress up and running at a reasonable pace I may consider just locking this thread up. (After all, it's fun!)
Anyway, games I've tried:
Liberal Crime Squad (Works excellent)
Sword of the Samurai and other dos titles
Mount and Blade Warband (meh)
Sooooo.... yeah. Any help and suggestions are appreciated.

Victoria II
Plants VS Zombies
Dungeons of Dredmor
KOTOR
Pretty much any game that was on PS1 to Atari if you can find an emulator hat works.

Enjoy.

On a different note, I've personally found almost any game that doesn't specifically rely on audio for portions of the gameplay are playable sans-sound. I keep sound muted when I play bloody everything.

MMORPGs. I normally turn the sound off when playing them and instead play my own music.

Honestly any game that doesn't rely on audio ques that can run on your laptop is good.

Which is the vast majority of games.

Heck, I can't think of a game outside of rhythm that would be poor.

Amnesia? Minecraft(Ghasts, Creepers)?

Actually a lot of people play Minecraft without sound at all (and outright disable creepers because they are the worst part of the game).

and Amnesia does do a lot of audio but it falls under what I called a "Audio cue heavy game" though I wouldn't say it becomes poor.

Cortex Command retains some fun without sound (in fact to have any decent FPS i have to turn sound off completely so it might work ok enough on this laptop when sound is off)
Heroes of Might and Magic (most sounds were primitive to begin with).
Quest for Glory from I to IV (not sure about V) i played them withous sound before i learned how to use Dosbox and had fun and i don't see any reasons you shouldn't... unless you dislike the genre.

The Battle for Wesnoth

Laser Squad, Nemesis

Most turn based games should meet your needs, even on an older/low-end laptop.
