As with a lot of other things in DF, it kinda comes down to luck. What's scary about necromancers is how they revive a lot of zombies to fight with them.

You proboly got a Necromancer apprentice. He proboly only been here for a few years.

There is usually 6 of them in a tower, you got 5 more to go.

I've had a necromancer siege broken when a kobold ambush squad got revealed by one of the corpses.  So far the kobold squads have broken up 3 sieges for this fort and I'm waiting to see it happen the fourth time.

Kobolds: We throw ourselves at the necromancers so you open the doors so we can steal stuff again!

Necromancers themselves are pretty weak, based on my experience in adventure mode. Their strength lies in zerging you with corpses.

I've only experienced necromancers in the arena, i accidentally made some armoured necromancer camel corpses while i was trying to work out a way of making my starting 7 survive OP zombie camels
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
, anyway there was a few piles of already dead zombie camels/ dogs/dwarves/camels and lots of body parts, it took all of a few seconds to reanimate all of them and swamp my dwarves.
They seemed rather overpowered but i think a fairer text and maybe some crossbows might proove how strong they really arent

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

This. Necromancers are just old civilian geezers who are packing robes, kitchen utensils, and no combat skills. If there aren't any dead things lying around for them to reanimate (or if you're a vampire and you don't have to worry about dead things), wiping out a tower full of Necromancers is like having Conan The Barbarian attack a retirement village.

So if a Necromancer turns up without many undead soldiers, and there aren't any dead things lying around for him to use, and you attack him hard and early, he's a piece of cake. If he turns up when you've got thirty dead goblins lying around on your front doorstep or he walks too close to one of your Butchers Workshops though, you are in seriously deep trouble.

nope actually you aren't, unless your important dwarves are outside or you have no defenses at all.

If you have no good military, It's just a matter of turtling and luring zombies/necros in traps in your main fort entrance.

Wow, um just an update. That necromancer apparently wasnt the only one.

A year later in game time i got besieged by another necromancer, this time a ranger necromancer. He brought buddies, 92 zombies composed of goblin, elf and humans.

I had no choice but to turn the entire population into an army, luckily i had 50 dogs thanks to the phoebus preset for embarks (comes with 10, they bred like crazy). Only lost 4 dwarves but now im in a tantrum spiral, crybabies.

yeah, you got lucky. the first real zombie siege I had brought 2 necromancers with it, and a HUGE portion of zombies. I have learned that mixing your cages and weapons traps can be a pain, as your cages fill with fragments of zombies faster than with whole zombies.

These Necromancers are really useful, by the way. I caught one in a cage trap and now I use him to revive goblins for archery practice. Soon my fort will be populated by legendary marksdwarfs.

I've been having this problem where necros sneak around on my map and never come out of hiding. Then they ressurect any dead nonstop WHILE hiding, which means any other ambushes cause my eventual demise as the bodies rack up. I even had one get into my refuse pile with my dwarves all around and didn't see him once.
