Unless salmonella in beef is far, far worse than what I think it is, 4x the risk is still ridiculously small. I'd also like to see comparisons to other products, not just regular beef; it would not surprise me if there were products out there, deemed perfectly acceptably safe, with greater risk than that.

The lesser nutritional value is another potential concern, but I'd also like to know by how much before making any judgement calls. I doubt it reduces the value to that of a block of congealed fat.

The problem is that they're using it as an extender, or an additive, without telling you how much, if any at all, they're using.  If it were labelled as what it was, there would be no problem.

That's the whole issue.  People here have been saying "it comes from a cow it's beef" when that is categorically not true, when all people are saying is that it should be labelled.  No one's saying it should be banned-- all anyone wants is that the FDA do its job and ensure people have a chance of making educated decisions about things that are vital to life.

Isn't beef already graded by the FDA, though? And wouldn't this receiving one of the lower ratings (which I assume it does) be enough to signify that its made from the crap bits?

I thought the ratings were based off of freshness.

Hense why Taco Bell tends to buy only the lowest grade of meat to go in their very low grade of Tacos (Sorry I am still not over the last Taco I tried to order from them... It was HORRIBLE in everyway... If I wasn't so shy I would have demanded a refund or a GOOD one)

The impression I got from the OP and the thread title is that the problem is that it is being fed to humans at all. Along with the "not fit for human consumption" lines. So yeah, I think some people are actually saying that, and that's what I intended to address earlier.

I actually agree with what you have said, and agree that the health risk is a problem (a small one, given those numbers, but still a problem that should be addressed, possibly through a more effective sterilization process - maybe radiation?) and that the nutritional differences need to be investigated (this is nutritionally gristle, so a lot of the protein is indigestible) and products definitely need to be labeled accordingly (so that, for instance, the protein content is listed as digestible protein, rather than total protein).

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Definition of Beef: The flesh of a cow, bull, or ox, used as food. is from cow, is eaten=beef. Categorically true. The things thats wrong is that it is not the quality of cut you would expect form even low grade beef.

Isn't beef already graded by the FDA, though? And wouldn't this receiving one of the lower ratings (which I assume it does) be enough to signify that its made from the crap bits?

no ratings are based off quality of the cut. The prime rib is better than the standard rib, upuntil the moment it spoils I guess at which time you can't eat the prime rib so it might as well be standard rib.

The issue is really just with the label's and the negligable health risks.

Yeah, should also effect the quality of the meat it is mixed in with.

never ever ever eat Taco Bell

everything there is absolutely disgusting.  The whole franchise would be shut down had I my druthers.

"Mexican" or "Tex-Mex" stuff isn't difficult to make for yourself, either.  If you have to get it on the run it's worth paying extra for stuff from a real sit-down restaurant.

Taco Bell's "beef" isn't, though. And I thought your problem here was with the misidentifying something's contents?

'Cause Taco Bell's stuff is less beef than this pink slime is, despite them having advertised it as that. In fact, only 30 odd percent of it is even from a cow.

I didn't say anything as to the quality of Taco Bell's product outside of them not using pink slime though?

No, but everyone else did, and you felt the need to explain how it wasn't horrible in that specific way (admittely the topic of the thread, so it makes sense.) But I thought the real problem we were discussing was companies peddling crap as beef. And that on that front, pink slime or no, Taco Bell is an absolutely horrible offender, and probably worse than groups that DO use the pink slime as far as "truth in advertising" goes. Though I think they were recently forced, legally, to stop saying the stuff they were selling was beef...

And all I did was point out that companies pretty much known for selling terrible cheap non-meat as meat aren't going near pink slime.  You're trying to skewer me on points I didn't make.  It's an important thing to note, given that there is a marked taste, texture, and odor difference in the ammonia treated pink-slime bulked meat, as well as the health issues (however minor people want to construe a 4x multiplier on your salmonella probabilities as being), might have a role in these companies staying away from it.

Even though Taco Bell and similar tend towards the cheapest route available, cutting corners in their products egregiously, they're still avoiding the pink slime.
