Far too many animals
« on: March 09, 2012, 11:53:19 am »

How can I get the new creatures out? If I just delete all animals from raws and copy paste from older version will it work allright or has something changed in the new version? Will it have bugs or something?

Check modding forums for more specific info - but basically yes.  If you remove a raw entry and gen a new world, that item will be missing.  Most animals are safe to remove, though removing things like stone can have unforeseen consequences.  Like if you remove kaolinite, then the gem clusters that occur in it won't occur...

Either way, snipping animals should be fine.  I recommend trawling the raws and picking and choosing.  You might like some newer entries more than older entries.  Just remove the entire code block to remove the animal.

I started doing that but then I realized there are like a thousand or more animals. But I'm halfway through now...

A good chunk of the new animals are in files called "creature_whatever_new.txt". You should be able to delete those and get rid of a good chunk of the creatures without issue.

I think Toady should leave only generic animals which serve a purpose and are somewhat familiar to non native players

The seven different kinds of gorillas seems a bit unimportant.

I believe that a big part of the player base are non english speakers such as myself. For us most of the new animals don't make any sense. Many animals are also basically the same but are different species in DF. Who needs 5 types of parrots for example?

I enjoy some of the unusual creatures.  Hoary Marmots are interesting.  Crows, Ravens, and Sparrows are not.

Massive number of minor monkeys is also little unnecessary. I think it was bonobo which had like ten different colours.

"Normal" species that you would consider typical for the biome are far too rare now. Replaced by giant ticks and louses. Seriously what is this I don't even...

I appreciate the variety, myself- I've turned down the Animal People though, I've been dealing with more Panda People than actual pandas.

I also get more giant and person types than normal types.  Haven't seen a groundhog since .18 but seen plenty of scorpion women and other stuff (which is probably just as sexy as it sounds).  I like the creature variants, but the "special" creatures outnumber the normals!

Hey - it seems I'll have to represent the other side here. I really like this end-and almost completely purposeless variety, because that is what DF is all about: This is the kind of content that so seperates it from any other game.
The animal men and giant versions should be toned down though.
