Your average FPS?
« on: March 07, 2012, 11:46:49 am »

What is everyones average FPS on DF? Perhaps we could get some !!science!! going on and figure out some more specific system requirements based on desired FPS speed?

I run vanilla DF, however I edit the raws to remove red sand (makes my eyes hurt with it's brightness) and aquifers (I'm still too much of a DF noob to handle these :P) and in a 5x5 fort on embark with a river and caverns, I run at an average of 750 FPS. However, my PC is monsterous :P
This is my first time running DF properly on this computer, so I don't know what it gets to once I get more stuff going on, but I'll report back when I do.

I'm not sure which specs effect DF performance, but I have 6GB memory and a quad core 3.7GHz intel i7.

My AMD Turion 64x2 laptop with 2GB RAM runs a 3x3 embark, with a small river (3 tiles wide) at around 50 FPS at embark. A few years in, with 60 dwarves, my FPS is still a playable 12-15 FPS (temperature and weather still active). It was worse in DF2011, the new version does see some speed improvement.
I've opened up 2 caverns. If I find the 3d, and breach magma, I fear my FPS will drop below 10. Once it drops below 5 FPS I have to abandon.

I really need a new pc.

A 4x4 embark with 7 dwarves, various animals, no giant rivers gives me upwards of 500 fps but I cap it to 300.

Fort with 100 Dwarves, animals, tons of crap and I still get around 90 fps.  I can boost it higher if I turn off Temperature though.

My Fps hovers around the 990 mark to start with on a 4 by 4 embark (max I've set is 999)
Over time it slowly moves down, until i hit about 800 with 200 dwarfs and a magma pump stack.
The big numbers are the result of my gaming rig, which has an Intel sandy bridge quad core I've Over-clocked to about 4.6 GHz, my pc also has 16 GB of 1600 MHz Kingston hyper-x Ram, all cooled by my lovely water cooling loop in my NZXT phantom case.

I usually get 900+ upon embark on a 4x4. I have it capped to 200. Incidentally, if you set all your digging designations right after embark at 900fps your miners will dig out half your fort in about a minute.

Currently with 180 dwarves and a multiple biome river I still get 200 (capped), with temp etc. turned on.

i7 920 @ 3.4GHZ, 6GB 1600 OCZ DDR3. Barely uses more than 20% of my cores though. Wish it threaded better. :(

Dwarves use their beards to influence the adamantite to change form. A dwarves beard is specialized in his job, therefore a legendary miner has a much better mining beard then a legendary weaponsmith, who has a beard that influences metals to make armor much more.
This also explains why dwarves can have a city on just a soap pillar, the beard of the soapmaking dwarf causes the soap to become rigid.

Im not technically inclined. Is that custom built, or can I order that prebuilt? Because Im salivating at that FPS.

I would like to know to.

Right now I have a laptop, single pentium core. It always sticks between 50 and 70 fps even at 120 dwarves....very strange.

I get around 120-150, but 150 is my cap so im not sure how high it goes,

while this is also true in vanilla, thanks to MasterworkDF i can keep 120-150 fps at 120-150 dwarfs.
i would recommend MasterworkDF to anyone with FPS issues. and yes i am recommending it in every single thread where someone complains about fps.

My only gripe with MasterworkDF is it removes so much stone from the game. I like pretty colors and geography. And damn it, I like microline.

that's toggleable btw. but it is one of the minor fps savers of the mod.

Self built. You can buy prebuilt gaming computers nowadays but they're much more expensive than building one yourself.

I bought my i7 setup right when I got out of the Marines in 2009, so I paid a premium. It's still one of the fastest you can get today.
