Large daggers: really large
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:54:20 pm »

So, today my current fortress saw combat for the first time. I've done a little bit of modding to make large daggers available, and here's a list of the parts one of my knifedwarves took off a goblin with her masterwork bronze:

:left hand
:left foot
:right foot
:right lower leg
:right hand
:right upper arm

Thanks for seeing to the bonecrafter's needs I guess. What sort of psychopath am I dealing with here anyway?

"She is mighty, very rarely sick, quite durable, very agile and very slow to tire.
She has a stunning feel for spatial relationships, a natural inclination toward language, a lot of willpower and a very good sense of the position of her own body, but she has poor focus and little patience.
She is slow to anger. She is very friendly. She does not have a great aesthetic sensitivity. She likes to try new things. She is open-minded to new ideas. She is candid and sincere in dealings wih others. She is compassionate. She lacks confidence. She strives for excellence. She cracks her knuckles when she's angry."

Beware the nice ones...

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Let's dissect that profile....

"Very durable".
She takes a lick'n and keeps on tickin'!

"Very agile".
Check! Fast and furious with that kitchen cleaver!

"Very slow to tire"
("I could do this all day!")

"She has a stunning feel for spacial relationships"
("If I cut here...and here...and here.........")
("The armbone's connected to the shoulder bone.....")

"She has a very good perception of the position of her own body"
("Then swing the cleaver like this.... and then like that.....")

"Has poor patience"
("See? Got done in half the time!")

"And poor focus."
("You mean this WASN'T a deadly kitten? By Armok! Your'e right! I just fillet a goblin brisket! Gross!")

"She is slow to anger"
("You know guys, you could have TOLD me that wasn't a kitten....")

"She is very friendly..."
("But that's ok, I love you guys :3 !")

.... you get the idea.  She's a horrible cross between cooking mama, pinkie pie, and "nanny" from count duckula. (If you haven't watched that classic 80s cartoon series, you are missing out.)

In short, a smiling, obliviously happy killing machine that makes goblin fillet-minon, and then giggles when nobody eats any.

She did it for SCIENCE!

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I could see her barging straight through a wall, yes.

[I am paralyzed with laughter!]

other than being commissioned with the giant kitchen knife, what other noteworthy skills does "nanny poppins" here have?

A normal, perfectly sane non-Bay12'er would be scared of the gigantic chicken. The inanimate cereal on a platter seems fine to me.

You have no idea how "brick house" nanny from count duckula actually is......

(Note the scale compared to duckula, igor, and the big amusement park gate behind her...)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Mostly, its the "obscene strength" coupled with innocent niavity that smacks of nanny. (Nanny wants nothing but to make her dukcyboos happy. She destroys, tortures, maims, and causes general chaos purely by accident!) The rest is more "expert chef" from cooking momma, and "bubbly oblivious happy and friendly" from pinkie pie.

She's basically the most terrifying thing with two legs. (And a beard.)

Well, as long as she didn't make that cereal herself...

Imush Bridgeweight the Fenced Knight of Splitting, as she is now called after the summer trading season, has Novice social skills and Competent mining skill. She's one of the founders and was always destined for the military.

In the spring a goblin got a lucky flesh wound to the foot and dropped her, which didn't stop her from crawling after the squad and catching one in a similar state as her. In the summer I sent her and her partner to catch a squad leader who was lagging behind, and accidentally led the two of them into two more squads. Whoops. At this point she got serious, foregoing her usual methods in favour of stabbing four of them in the head and lopping off a mere four body parts in the process.
