Hey, sorry if this in the wrong forum but I just downloaded DF and have been following this guide: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Quickstart_guide

Everything is going fine but I designated something to be mined down a staircase and nobody will acknowledge it. Can anyone help me?

That looks like a staircase, surrounded by solid soil walls, with the digging designation outside the walls.  You need to designate the places directly adjacent to the staircase to be dug before you can dig further out.

Ah, the problem is that you have a down stair on the level above, and then a down stair below that.  That won't work.  You needed to have dug an up stair (or an up/down) stair on the lower level.  Dwarves can't reach the lower level as it is.

You'll need to dig a down stair on the upper level in a different spot, and then dig an up or up/down stair below it.

Are the miners doing anything else? Do they have No Job on the units screen?

Over the place in the first screen shot, find where the down stair leads up. Then uild a [d]own stairs over it. That should help. If they can't reach it, they won't mine it.
