In this very picture, you see smoke, ash, and dead dwarves! But seriously, can anyone tell me what happened? I recently tried to start up my magma forges and when I opened the volcano, my hallway was filled with smoke. Then, I found out that I only had two survivors left.

Anyway, it's likely that you inadvertently doused some of your dwarves with magma when you opened the volcano, thus causing them to become smoke, ash, and dead. Alternatively, you've got fire imps, who threw fireballs at your dwarves and turned them into smoke, ash, and dead dwarves.

Edit: Ah, I can see the picture now. Looks like you got magma or a flaming creature (created by magma) on the grass, which then burned up everything else. Fire spreads, you know.

Some sort of fire creature popped out of your volcano, checked the units screen?

possibly one of the dwarves caught fire, then igniting other dwarves an animals in a chain reaction until you only had two stray dwarves left. there is always the option of the magma dweller's though.

Bloody funny to see one of the buggers run like h*ll with a smoke trace. He might have tried putting himself out with a liquid, which caught fire? :p

I seem to remember reading that alcohol does indeed burn fast and furious, perhaps even going *boom*.
