Cause of spontaneous combustion?
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:41:51 pm »

My most recent embark suffered an unfortunate spontaneous combustion, claiming the lives of all seven dwarves in a matter of seconds.

Has this ever happened to anyone before, and if so, What causes this? My best bet would be embarking on some fire-emitting megabeast, but the area on fire appeared as if it was quite large.
Did Toady introduce explosive alcohol and not tell us?

Alcohol always was flamable.

Did you embark in a scorching biome?

No, I did not. Temperate, I do believe. I meant explosive, not flammable. Almost that entire region was on fire.

By "entire region" do you mean the noticably blackened area in the pic, or the entire embark? It definitely isn't the temperature, seeing as how the water and flora are doing fine. Whatever it is, it reeks of badassery.

Edit: Might have been some "curse" effect (totally not informed on the topic); one of the dwarves had probably lost favor with his diety and you managed to embark with him at the wrong right time.

It's only the noticeably blackened/smoky area that was suddenly engulfed in flames. I too know nothing about about curses, but it's as plausible a theory as any other.

This is how rumors get started/perpetuated.

If the local climate was set too hot, the grass etc. could spontaneously catch fire.  Was it a "scorching hot" biome by any chance?

Did someone mess with skin and/or blood temperatures? I hope so. That's always !FUN!

How does this perpetuate a rumor? I'm making a conjecture relating to the obscure nature of some of the recent build's features and the relevant situation. Not stating any facts. Also, utilitarian stated that it was not a hot biome. Freakishly high skin/blood temperatures would probably do it, but how would that come about without modding? Diety interaction?

It can't be deities. The starting seven are genned at embark. They don't have a possibility to have curses placed on them by the gods.

Wat.

Alcohol burns in DF, unless that was removed in one of the newer releases. Thats why we are paranoid about magmacreatures X booze stockpiles.
Rumour?

It doesn't burn, it only boils, as any other liquid.

It's almost certainly a lethal mist of some sort. You just had the misfortune to embark right in the middle of it. It was not a divine curse. The only divine curses are the curses of vampirism and lycanthropy.

It may be caused by modding.

Why don't you just embark again under the same conditions, but this time actually check what's burning? That doesn't sound too hard.
