Another poll, I believe given the state of the world now and how history as gone, we will have vastly more Federals than Confederates.

Expressing your reasons why are very welcome here!

It's a poll, you click button and people can remark upon and comment on the results and reasons if they wish. I thought it was self evident.

Well I got that, but I thought slavery was sorta a dead issue.

States rights aren't in the slightest a dead issue, some would say this is the major reason the Confederacy fought alongside or in priority of the maintaining of the economic system of slavery. I would be one of them.
...and it does say - If the civil war was starting TODAY(we were in 1861), what would you do?

I would be the one headed straight for Canada to avoid all the ensuing madness. Yes, both sides had some points (to be crystal clear, I sympathize with secessionists of all sorts, not proponents of slavery), but the fact that it came down to warfare, to me, is only tragic.

I would say lets ignore the slavery part as this has no baring in modern life. However despite me not believing that was the primary cause of secession, it was without any doubt to anyone a cause. That wouldn't be a fair historical situation. It favors the south too dishonestly.

How about human rights? Because that is still a large issue today, and in fact the states ability to take away human rights is pretty much one of the major fighting points about states rights.

It might not be black people, and it might not be straight up slavery, but allowing the states to have the sorta rights they wanted back then now would cause the same issues.

A reasonable proposal, but its 1861, slavery exists and is an issue or both northerners and southerners.
We have to try and be objective and not look back with 21st century eyes, the greatest enemy of the Confederate  :P

So basically we should ignore some historical issues in a discussion of a given time period because they are morally repugnant to more than a minority of the population now?

No, we have to look back to 1861 and not see SLAVERY SLAVERY SLAVERY, because thats not what the Confederates or the Federals saw. Thats the essence of all historical study.

Well, if the civil war happened this year as opposed to the 1800s, I think I would...

But seriously, I don't think this debate could really have a good back-and-forth; even without slavery, we still view the USA as one cohesive whole. Given that we know what the course it was put on ended up as (that is, a pretty darn good place to live), I doubt people would support the Confederates due to either uncertainty or because we expect the USA to be a single functioning unit. Personally, the idea of independent states seems absurd, though that may just be me.
