ask for surroundings

What do they say when they're talking about a tower? One guy spoke of "great evil being there", which I guess could be it but when I looked all I saw was a large patch of evil biome.

Just spam surroundings by bashing enter, then start up the log and look for any purple I's.

If you dont see any, go further.
also, its good to first go in legends, choose historical maps and look around for towers, then do a civ near those towers.

A finite number of towers appear during worldgen, as a purple 'I' in the map. When starting a fortress embark, they also appear as "tower" in the neighboring civ list. So you might just have created worlds with no towers. They're not guaranteed, so check genned worlds for towers while creating.

I found a necromancer's tower when people asked me to go deal with it. Upon arrival, I sighted hundreds of humans, dwarves, elves and goblins, all mostly peasants, engaged in an absurd melee with their own severed limbs. After waiting around for hundreds of ticks (for the melee to wear itself out) I charged in and was instantly killed.

I was concerned that a bug was causing parts to resurrect as whole persons, but probably not. They just get re-raised.

So... clearing a necromancer tower is impossible?

Would be nice if killed undead crumble to dust or something. Do I have to pulverize the zombies to eliminate them, slice every finger, joint, and break every limb?

Clearing a necromancer's tower isn't impossible...  just really, really hard if you're not a vampire or necromancer yourself. To keep parts from getting reraised, you need to kill the enemy necromancers. And those guys are on the BALL. I once fought one and severed both of his arms in turn; for each of them, he immediately raised it. I'd like to think that if he lived long enough post-decapitation, he'd re-raise his own head before it hit the ground.

In that case, you won't be able to become a necromancer, I'm pretty sure (gotta be mortal for that to happen). But if you just want to collect the books and slab, it should be easy enough; the necromancers will be the only hostiles in the tower, and they're usually not fighters (although you get unlucky sometimes; I raided a tower recently that had two ranger-necromancers in it, and they perforated me).

i heard that if you are a vamp, you can recruit a necromancer... is that true? i know that mummies don't prefer to leave their tombs... but my necromancer charcacters had to many zombies as it was, they didn't need an apprentice raising all the scraps they left behind.

Nope. 'Fraid that particular adventurer is out of luck.

If you want to simply become a necromancer without the hassle of going through the tower as a non-vampire, there are two things you can do. First, you could clear the tower and collect the slab as a vampire, go retire in an easily-located spot (a specific fortress, for instance), make a new adventurer, track down your old adventurer, murder them, and take the slab.

The other, significantly more complex method is to look through your Legends Artifacts file, look at all the entries for the slabs in that world, note their storage spots, and look up their storage spots in Legends mode. Some slabs are stored in fortresses and not towers, and if that's the case they'll be lying around completely unguarded (I found one lying on a parapet). Then you can track down the fortress as an adventurer and pick up the slab at your leisure. Be sure to note which civ founded the fortress and start as a human of that civ, so that you will be relatively nearby.
