The kickstarter thing has started - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2.

I'm mostly curious how traditional an RPG they're willing to make without a publisher breathing down their backs. Like I'm hoping Bard's Tale becoming an average Action RPG was some sort of compromise just to get it funded by a publisher, but I dunno.

Also sort of curious how much it'll be Wasteland and how much it'll be not-Fallout. For example, Wasteland was considerably more cooky, and yet here they're bringing in Mark Morgan to do the music for the atmosphere. I'd be fine with anything in between, though. As long as they don't make something mechanically simpler than both of them.

I'm in for $75. Upped my double fine pledge to $110 as well for the boxed copy.

Poland can into money!

I'm hopeful that this will be a faithful sequel, and I'm geeked about all the goodies they're making to go with it (cloth map?!? SQUEEE). The higher tier rewards are downright hilarious (become an NPC, have a statue made of you, have an in-game shrine made to you

Also, I had no idea that Michael Stackpole was part one of the guys who worked on the original. He's known for doing a ton of the Battletech novels, and those were pretty good given the material.

Doesn't seem to have exploded the heavens like Schafer's thing did, but then Fargo has been out of the limelight for a lot longer, and his studio doesn't have bona fide hits to its name like Double Fine has. OTOH, they just gained $3,000 in the last five minutes, so....

Ok, here's my list of things Wasteland 2 has to have to continue being Wasteland and not start being Fallout:

1) PARTY: You must create your party. Not create a single player character, then recruit one or two premade NPCs. The party size has to be similar to Wasteland, at least (that was 4 generated members with optional 2 NPCs if I rememeber correctly).

2) You must be the Desert Rangers. Not some tribal from some village, or people with different backgrounds, no. Desert Rangers dammit! (and not the F:NV Rangers).

3) Ion Beamer, Meson Cannon, Proton Ax and Power Armor.

4) Doors/windows that can/need to be blown up.

5) "As Fallout is the post-apocalyptic 1950s, so Wasteland must be the post-apocalyptic 1980s. That would make a nice sharp distinction." (loose nut's suggestion)

6) You must be able to kill Faran Brygo. (to make up for the Bard's Tale fiasco).

...

I'm out.

I'll add more as I think about them.

Don't see why being the Desert Rangers is a necessity, I think it would add more oldschool RPG cred if there were a variety of backgroundsand jobs to choose from.

In the original, all your characters were Desert Rangers, even if they were technical specialists with only a smattering of combat skills. There weren't even classes, just stats and skillpoints. I wonder if they'll keep the original thing where your characters could be American, Russian, Chinese, Indian or Mexican (which helped determine your starting equipment but not much else).

Desert Rangers is not a job or a class. It's not the Fallout NV Desert Rangers (basically elite soldiers).

Desert Rangers was the club you belonged to when you were generated, out of Ranger Base (formerly some prison).

It's like saying "Adventurer's Guild" in Bard's Tale is a job.

Almost certainly this will be massively over hyped due to the team of superstars and fail horribly. But at least it won't fail because I didn't back it, so here's hoping.

I honestly know nothing about Wasteland apart from it spawned Fallout (1988 is a bit too early for me :P).
I'm interested since I could never got into the first two Fallouts. Don't hate me for this but I just didn't like the combat at all (not a huge turn based RPG guy) and Tactics was such a massive step up for me. Don't get me wrong I liked the little storyline and charactors I got up to but I just couldn't get far through the game due to the combat.

So what I'm asking is if people think it's going to be a whole turn based thing or a real time tactial party based thing like Baldur's Gate? I'm a little worried about pledging some money if I won't have all that much interest in the game due to gameplay mechanics, sounds rather shallow I know. I suppose there's always the "wait and see" approach but that box-set does sound interesting.

I'm assume however that all the informating we have about this game is from the kickstart page which feels a bit like a shot in the dark.
